At random: Coronation ceremonies of Emperor Alexander II of Russia in 1855 were enlivened by a submarine concert. Wilhelm Bauer, a Bavarian inventor, took three musicians under the waters of Kronstadt Harbor in a submarine he had built, where they played appropriate music during the coronation. The music was distinctly heard on the surface.

FUNK, John H., 83, of Topeka, KS crossed over Wednesday, November 7, 2007. He was born December 11, 1923 in Topeka, the son of Maon and Mary Funk. He served in the Navy during WWII on the submarine USS Torsk (SS-423). The Torsk sank the last 2 Japanese ships of WWII. He was employed by the Rock Island RR for 38 years , retiring in 1981. He was an active volunteer at Kansas Dialysis Center for 2 years. In 1948 he married Shirley Ann Sharp who passed on in 1992. They had one son Daryl John who died November 2005. John left 3 granddaughters, 3 great grandchildren and 3 step children. He married Enola Handgis in 1995 who survives him. He is also survived by a sister Marion, a sister Rosalee and a brother Forrest. John was a member of the Blue Lodge #90, the Medio Grotto and the Sun Chasers camping club. Services are pending. He did not mourn for the past, worry about the future but lived in the present moment wisely and earnestly.


STAMOS, Edward Angelo, 83, of Eugene, OR, died November 2, 2007. Ed was born September 10, 1924, in Montesano, WA, to James and Jessie Stamos. After graduating high school, Ed served in the US Submarine Service during World War II. He married Doris Mae Houghton in 1945 and together they had three children. He married Carolee Black in 1965, and together they had three children. He retired from Georgia-Pacific in Coquille in 1985, after 38 years of service. Ed was an avid golfer, and rockhound and he loved music. Ed is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Tony Stamos of Eugene, Angela Shelton and her husband, Brad of Coquille, Terry Stamos and his wife, Mary Etta of Springfield, Donna Royce of Springfield, Patty Reesman and her husband, Don of Oakridge; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Ed was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Gerald Stamos; and a daughter, Sondi Stamos-Raia. Sign the guestbook at http://www.theworldlink.com.
