Elvis took a lot of stick in his early career. He was displayed by many critics as a moral threat to the youth of America because of his hip swivelling actions when singing rock ‘n ‘roll during his performances. This prompted my own father to heavily criticise him after reading items from the US in UK newspapers but that would gradually change as his career developed.
When he entered his military service as a tank driver my Dad’s opinion began to alter as he too had been a tank driver during WWII and accordingly it became a bond. Finally, he agreed that Presley could really sing and appreciate his talent, especially in the Gospel music he enjoyed. Dad wore out my first gospel album of “His Hand in Mine” by playing it non-stop but he did buy a new one for me later when I came home from sea.
I admired Elvis that even at the height of stardom, he never left his basic Christian upbringing behind or renounced it. This poor kid from Tupelo, Mississippi, didn’t try to change his native roots and values learnt in his early years at church. To be honest, if English clergy with their boring styles of sanctimonious delivery and poor choice of hymns had tried some Gospel music in their services I might have been attracted to attend more than I did. So here is a real Sunday Song’s selection.
