At random: Long considered a versatile and deadly instrument of war, the submarine has broadened her capabilities with the adoption of nuclear power. Today the submarine serves as a ballistic missile platform, early warning station, killer of surface and underwater vessels, scout, coastal raider troop transport, supply ship, mine layer, and seaplane tender.

POOLE, Hunter A., Jr., 60, died April 27, 2021 in Linville, NC due to complications of liver cancer. He is survived by his mother Olive Virginia Poole, his brother David A. Poole, sister-in-law Michelle Poole, and beloved Jack Russell "Tippy" Poole. He was preceded in death by his father, Hunter A. Poole Sr. A native of Raleigh, NC Hunter was born May 22, 1960 in the old Rex Hospital off Saint Mary's street. He graduated with a GED from Wake Tech in 1980 and later earned associate degrees in business and mechanics. Hunter was a Cold War veteran who served in the US Navy 1981-1988. He served his nation with distinction in the Submarine Service where he was recognized as the 1984 US Pacific Fleet Sailor of the Year. He was stationed in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and San Diego, California where he was also a Drill Instructor for the US Navy's Recruit Training Command. Hunter was a lifelong learner, voracious reader, mechanic, woodworker, an excellent cook, and insufferable almanac of facts. Later in life Hunter most enjoyed watching football with his brother as they supported his Las Vegas Raiders, brother's Carolina Panthers, and their NC State Wolfpack. But any game was a good excuse to share an authentic New York pizza, homemade lemon (or chocolate) chess pie, and diet ginger ale. In lieu of flowers Hunter wanted people to donate to the North Carolina Food Bank or any organization that feeds the hungry. His life will be celebrated during a private family gathering at the kickoff of the football season. Run Silent. Run Deep. Published in The News & Observer on May 9, 2021.
