| Subject: Guppy II boats.......design question.... Anything "hang" just below the bow on these subs?????? I have a starboard side view (color drawing) of USS Blackfin SS-322.....there's definitely something up forward, seems to be hanging right under the bow..... sonar device???? takes away from the boat's lines to a point where it doesn't look "kosher." Wouldn't see it when moored or underway.... Comes from reliable sub artist....The same gent did a print of my destroyer, the BIG sonar dome was in correct place and to scale. From one old man to another.......definitely a chin mounted sonar......sure looks out of place........had to be an issue when running on the surface, although the BIG sonar dome on my destroyer leader actually helped keep her bow from rising and slamming down.....some of the new Arleigh Burles have had "slamming" damage to their bows...The old John S. McCain held speed record in Pacific for awhile, so the big dome didn't slow us down, with four boilers on line and 1200 psi steam from the getgo, she was fast....in cooler water (at night) during a full power run, we did more than 43 knots....couldn't use much rudder, threw BIG rooster tail......The dome under the Guppy bow looks like it added almost 8 feet (up forward) to bottom of her keel depth......Can't really tell from the photo (bow on), BUT it was big..... Soon after that ride the first of the tear drop shaped smaller subs came to Pearl......we were away for months during all the tests at Johnson Island, and then went back to WESTPAC for another CV escort session so I never had the opportunity to hitch a ride on that new sub.....I'd really like to get a tour of the Virginia class, used this new sub in my novel THE STRAIT.....also used the ASDS....and SEALs.....to "get" bad guys, i.e., Islamic terrorists & PLAN....... Thanks Dave.......In the silouette color plate of the USS Blackfin I purchased, the dome looks like a square box affixed just below the chin......I'd never seen the sub out of water at Pearl in the early 1960's. The newer DDs, DDGs and DLs had a big sonar dome up forward (SQS-5) as I recall......NOT on chin but aft far enough to help with streamlining the ride.........that's why I raised the question in the first place...... Take a look at the new bow on the USS Virginia class Block III subs......new bow sonar and new vertical launch system using the SSGN's MAC approach.....with six missiles vice seven. Tincanman | |||
