COOK, William E., Jr., CAPT, USN, Ret., 72, of Mount Pleasant, SC, died Monday, November 7, 2022. Bill was born January 23, 1950, in Tupelo, Mississippi, son of the late Cmdr. William Eckford Cook, Sr., USN (Ret.) and the late Mae Nelle Gladney Cook. He graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1972 with a BS in Physics, and from the US Naval War College in 1993 with an MA in Defense and Strategic Studies. He was in the submarine service through most of his 30 years in the Navy. He was commanding officer of USS George Bancroft (SSBN-643) (Blue) from 1989-1992, USS Kentucky (SSBN-737) (Gold) from 1994-1996, and the Naval Weapons Station Charleston from 2000-2002. He was a recipient of the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Service Medal. His enjoyment of traveling around the world continued in his retirement years. He will be remembered for his love of country and family. He is survived by daughter, Cynthia Maiko Cook of Oakland, CA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Fusako Iwata Cook, son, Christopher Tomo Cook, and his brother, Paul Christopher Cook. Funeral Service will be held Friday, November 18, 2022, in the J Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel, 1494 Mathis Ferry Rd. at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will follow in Magnolia Cemetery, 70 Cunnington Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation, dolphinscholarship.org/. HULINGS, William Daniel, died on November 11, 2022, at Chambersburg Hospital surrounded by family. Dan was born in Vandergrift, Pa and moved to Fairless Hills, PA as a young child. He graduated from Pennsbury High School in 1962. After graduation, Dan enlisted in the Navy and spent his 4 years on a submarine, the USS Picuda (SS-382). After his training in Groton, CT; he was stationed in Key West. It is very fitting and appropriate that Dan passed away on Veterans Day as he was extremely proud of his service to our country. Dan spent his civilian career working as a machinist/tool and die maker. He worked for RobRoy Plastics in Morrisville, PA before moving to Chambersburg to work for Nursery Supply. Over his years he enjoyed camping, bowling, skating, riding his motorcycles, going to car races and attending Rolling Thunder to mention a few. He also enjoyed yard work and volunteering at Chambersburg Hospital where he accrued 8000 hours of volunteer time. His volunteer friends referred to him as “Dr D”. Dan also volunteered at the Cold Weather Drop-in Shelter and enjoyed working security assignments for P2 Investigations. Dan was a member of the Fairless Hills Masonic Lodge #776, Kensington-Kadosh Commandery #54, Mercer Council Princes of Jerusalem, Knights of the Mecca Shrine Club Cresent Temple and Scottish Rite to name a few. Additionally, Dan was an active member of the Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring and the United States Submarine Service Veterans Tri-State Base. Dan is preceded in death by his parents, Billy D. and Mary Jane Hulings, a brother Sam, and his wife Donna J. Hulings. Surviving is brother Randy Hulings (wife Sue), sister Janie Jones, (husband Jack) and beloved daughter Danielle Hulings, grandson Joshua Rubin, companion Debra Stewart and 2 cats (Archie and Samantha). A Celebration of Life Service will be held at the Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring on Saturday, November 26, 2022, at 1:00 in the afternoon. A Masonic Service will be held before the Celebration of Life Service beginning at 12:45. Honors by the Submarine Veterans and the Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post #1599 Honor Guard. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Dan can be made to the Presbyterian Church of Falling Spring, 221 North Main Street, Chambersburg, PA 17201 or to USSVI Tri-State Base c/o Cam MacKenzie, Treasurer, 20531 Woodbridge Drive, Hagerstown, MD 21742. CRUE, Raymond Earle, 86, of Oxford, MI died at home surrounded by loved ones on November 15, 2022. Ray was born in San Pedro, California. After graduating from high school, he enlisted in the US Navy and served seven years in the US Submarine Service, including on the USS John Adams. He was honorably discharged and later was employed in the machine tool industry at LaPointe Machine Tool in Hudson, Massachusetts. Ray loved being with his family, was an avid golfer, enjoyed a good game of cards, and designed and sewed beautiful quilts. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Palmer Crue, sons Raymond Jr., (Nancy), Brian (Amy), and grandchildren Ryan, Evan, Maddie, Amelie, and Natalie. He is also survived by his siblings Charles, Larry, Jim, and predeceased by Billy and Lil. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Great Lakes Dog Rescue (www.greatlakesdogrescue.com) in Metamora, Michigan. Posted online on November 17, 2022.
