The Columbia, along with most 'round hulled' nuclear submarines do not have a 'keel' in the traditional sense of the word. Some time ago it was felt that 'frame raising' would be a more proper term but that was not adopted. In some cases there was a large vertical piece which went somewhere near or on the bottom of the hull
on which the sponsors initials were weld beaded, but not on all ships/classes.
