The "wooden spoon" method works. Just seeing it coming was enough to beg for mercy.

When we were kids we were what they call now " free range" kids.
Now they are arresting moms who allow their young kids to walk more that the gov't allowed distance from their homes.

My mom would be put in jail today for using a peach tree branch on us.
Good thing we grew up when we did.

When I was about 13, I was living in Mt Vernon NY which was about a 15 minute walk to the end of the subway line in the North Bronx.

We would take the subway all the way to lower Manhattan and board the Staten Island Ferry for a ride across New York Harbor.

Then we would reverse and go home.

Mom would says "how was your day" and I would say "great".

PS - the subway was 15 cents each way and the ferry was a nickel (no charge for the return trip).

We packed PBJ for lunch.

All weekend I've been thinking about the last time I carried any coins in my pockets.
I don't recall when.

If you ever sailed out of Holy Loch you'd remember coins in your pocket. This is before they changed to the decimal system. Those Penny coins were the size of our 50 cent pieces or the dollar coin. The Half Crown's were also large. The Penny's usually ended up getting tossed off the end of the pier.

I always carry about $2.50 in mixed coins. I clean out the excess weekly.
