While researching 70 crew members of USS Grunion, including seven from Ohio, didn't notice the designation Chief of the Boat.

If true, what rate would have been comparable to COB? Thanks.

The Chief of the Boat was selected by the CO from those already assigned to the boat.

Thus, he could have had any rate and need not have been pointed out as COB unless it was needed in the document.

Thanks for info. Even knowing ages, (oldest born in 1895 and 1899) rates of those who went down with Grunion, doesn't reflect an answer.

Maybe when I'm at Grunion family gathering in Cleveland/COD Base in October I'll find out, although not really important. That their families, too, suffered and then found a special commonality by searching for/finding the boat and relatives of crew members a poignant and important story.
