As a result of a trip in an early United States submarine, President "Teddy" Roosevelt ordered extra compensation for personnel serving in the "Silent Service." President Harry Truman made a 440 foot dive in a captured German submarine. The first President to cruise aboard a nuclear submarine was President Eisenhower who rode the USS SEAWOLF out of Newport, Rhode Island on September 26, 1957.

Loren (Larry) H. Publicover, 81, of Toms River, NJ passed away in the presence of his family, Saturday, Nov. 21 at Ocean Medical Center, Brick. Born in Staten Island, N.Y., Loren and his wife moved to Toms River 13 years ago. Loren was a master electrician and retired in the late 80's from the Health and Hospitals Corp., Queens, N.Y. Loren was a veteran submariner in the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country in the Korean War. He is a life member of the United States Submarine Veterans, Jersey Shore Base. He was a devoted and loving husband, father and pop-pop. One of his favorite days was the birth of his granddaughter whom he loved to spoil. Loren will be remembered for his sense of humor, his kind heart and his desire to always help others. There are no words to express what a wonderful man he was. "A life that touches others goes on forever." Loren is survived by his wife of 49 ½ years, Jacqueline; a daughter, Laureen Coup and her husband David of Bayville; and a granddaughter, Emily Rose Coup. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 29 at Kedz Funeral Home, 1123 Hooper Ave., Toms River. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 30 at the funeral home, followed by a committal service at the Ocean County Memorial Park, 1722 Silverton Road, Toms River.

Cyril J. Tuckfield, Jr. of Preston, CT passed away at the Wm.W. Backus Hospital, Norwich on November 23, 2009. As a former resident of Miami, FL, he joined the Navy in 1942. During his career Tuck served on submarines conducting eleven war patrols, eight on the USS Stingray (SS-186). After WW2 he was stationed at the Submarine Escape Training Tank at the New London Sub Base. In October 1959, Tuck and Cmdr. G.F. Bond set a record for the first buoyant ascent off a submarine [Archerfish (SS-311)] from the depth of 302 feet, for which he received the Legion of Merit award. During his course in the Navy he qualified as a first class diver and was involved in the Sealab program from beginning to end. After an outstanding career, he retired in 1972. His memberships include: Submarine Veterans of World War 2, Order of the Masons, and the Preston City Congregational Church. He leaves his wife, Audrey Gaucher, brother Jack of Miami. FL, and three step-children. A memorial service is planned for 11:00 AM, December 1 at the Preston City Congregational Church, 321 Route 164, Preston. Burial at sea is being planned with the Navy in Panama City, FL. Donations may be made in his memory to his church or the donor's choice. The Church and Allen Funeral Home, 136 Sachem St. Norwich, is entrusted with arrangements.

Lincoln O'dell Pace, 85, of Tempe, AZ passed away on November 22, 2009, was the youngest of ten children born on December 17, 1923 to early Mormon settlers, James Byrum Pace and Adeline Savage Pace of Woodruff, Arizona. During World War II, he volunteered for the Navy and received training both in San Diego and at the University of Iowa flight school. He served on a submarine and spent time in Alaska, Hawaii, New Guinea, and Australia. After the war, he earned bachelor's and master's degrees at Arizona State University and owned and operated three successful service stations. He was a life-long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He and his wife, Eunice, held several leadership positions and for thirteen years were workers in the Mesa LDS Temple. They also worked in Tempe with the Boy Scouts of America for over thirty-five years. He was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael William Pace, and a daughter, Jeanetta Ann Pace Douglas, who died on November 4, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eunice Naomi Gillihan Pace, daughter Jacqueline O'dell Pace Lee, grandchildren Kimberlee Ann Parker and William James Lee, Jr. and great grandchildren Alexander Parker, and William, Brandon, Brogan, and Brycen Lee. Services will be held at the LDS Del Rio Chapel, 1881 E. Del Rio, Tempe, on Saturday November 28. Visitation will be at 1:00, with the funeral starting at 2:00. Burial will be in the Thatcher cemetery at 2:00 on Sunday, November 29.
