BERGERON Robert Henry, Jr., 81, a longtime and beloved member of the Barkhamsted, CT community, died on April 11, 2023. He was predeceased by his wife and best friend, Jane (McCorkle) Bergeron, in 2016. Bob was born to Robert Henry Bergeron Sr. and Mary (Kelly) Bergeron in New Britain, CT in September of 1941. The oldest of six boys, he joined the US Navy at the age of 18, serving as Electrician's Mate First Class on the submarine USS Conger (SS-477) during the Vietnam War. Bob went on to work at the Red Cross in Farmington, CT, before purchasing and running the Pleasant Valley General Store in Barkhamsted for over 20 years, leaving a lasting impact on the town and the people who knew him. After retiring in 2004, he turned his energy toward volunteering at the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church Food Bank, where he quickly became a fixture among the committed volunteers. A man of wide-ranging hobbies and interests, Bob was a frequent traveler and an avid collector of antiques and memorabilia. He enjoyed visiting historical places and could often be found making gravestone rubbings. Indeed, Bob's curiosity was boundless; his love of nature and animals led him to earn a degree in biology from Central Connecticut State College and he was well-versed in the history of the Civil War. "Bob with one 'o'" as he often liked to call himself, his intelligence was matched by his sense of humor. Bob is survived by his son Robert Henry Bergeron III, daughter-in-law Nicole Velez Bergeron, and grandchildren Riley and Alexander Bergeron. He is also survived by his brothers Donald Bergeron (Valerie), Kenneth Bergeron (Heidi), Roy Bergeron (Josie), and Dean Bergeron (Kathy), and his many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Bob was predeceased by his brother James Bergeron and parents Mary and Bob Bergeron Sr. A memorial service in honor of his life will be held at Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church at 93 River Rd, Pleasant Valley, CT 06063 on May 13, starting at 10:30 AM, with a reception to follow in the church hall. Those wishing to honor Bob's memory are asked to please donate to the Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church Food Bank & Roof Fund at PO Box 181, Pleasant Valley, CT 06063.
