SCHAFER .. .. .. Larry Joe Schafer, 85 and a long time resident of Evansville, lost his battle with cancer, peacefully passing away at the Linda White Hospice Center Deaconess at 10:20 p.m. on August 13, 2025 surrounded by his family. Larry was born on July 1, 1941 in Canton, Illinois to Louis "Bud" and Helen Schafer. Larry was raised in Francisco, Indiana and was a proud graduate of Francisco High School where he also played basketball. After graduating, he joined the United States Navy, soon finding his way to Yokosuka Naval Base where he specialized in communications on a submarine. He was also a member of the traveling basketball team. Larry was a proud member of the American Legion and the VFW. While serving in Japan, Larry met the love of his life, Mitsuko Iijima. They were happily married on May 23, 1961 and set up home in Francisco. Together, they had 3 children; daughter Kimiko Lynn (deceased), son Chris, and daughter Kumiko Lynn. After returning from the Navy, Larry began working for Potter & Brumfield (Siemens) and would retire 38 years later as their International Sales Manager. Work was literally a hobby for Larry. After retirement, he helped Mitsuko with anything necessary at her Japanese restaurant, Kanpai! He loved singing Sinatra and Elvis tunes for the customers as they dined. After Mitsuko retired, they enjoyed trips on his Harley Davidson Road King and cruises with friends. Larry loved building things with his hands and remodeling houses. A great source of pride for Larry was the home he and Mitsuko designed and built in Princeton, Indiana, the majority of it by their own hands and a lot of love. He disliked having idle hands up to the day of his passing. Work was never work for Larry. The end result of it all was something he took great joy in. His hobbies included motorcycles, golf, woodworking, and anything sports related. What Larry really loved and adored were his children and grandchildren! He helped coach several Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams, managed an American Legion baseball team and was a founding member of the Goaltenders Booster Club for the Princeton, Indiana High School Basketball Team in 1983. No game was too far for him to attend. His and Mitsuko's (Meme) greatest joys were their five grandchildren: Kayman, Cole, Conner, Trey, Zane, and great-grandson, C.J. Preceding him in death were his parents, Bud and Helen Schafer, sister Judy, brother Mike Schafer, infant daughter Kimiko Lynn and beloved wife of 52 years, Mitsuko, who he has now joined in Heaven with our Lord. He is survived by son Chris Schafer and daughter-in-law Laila, daughter Kumiko Wilkison and son-in-law Chris, grandchildren Cole, Conner (wife Georgia Lea), and Trey Schafer, Zane Wilkison, Kayman (husband John Coloso), great-grandson C.J., sister Peggy Willis (husband Gary), best friend since 2nd grade, George Green, sweetheart, Wanda Powell, and several nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Japan. SHOW .. .. .. Gary Lee Show, 76, of Ames, Iowa, formerly of Mason City and Charles City, passed away Thursday, August 14, 2025, at Mary Greeley Medical Center Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Per Gary's wishes, a private family graveside service will be held at Sunnyside Memory Gardens in rural Charles City with Pastor Danny Housholder from Lutheran Church of Hope, Ames, officiating. Gary Lee Show was born on October 17, 1948, in Charles City to LeRoy Show and Mable (Brandau-Show) Truitt. He received his education in Charles City and Plainfield, graduating from Plainfield High School in 1966. Gary continued his education at Central Christian College in McPherson, Kansas, and Greenville College in Greenville, Illinois, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Greenville in 1970. Gary enlisted in the United States Navy in 1971 and enjoyed a 22-year career serving on the following ships: USS Kitty Hawk, USS Gurke, USS Ashtabula, and the USS Barbara. His service also included one submarine tour on the USS Barb, and Navy Recruiting District assignments in the cities of San Diego, New Orleans, Oklahoma City, Buffalo, and Houston. Gary retired from the Navy in February 1993 as a Master Chief Petty Officer, qualified in Surface and Submarine Warfare. During his naval career he received a Joint Service Commendation Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (gallantry cross medal), Combat Action Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Armer Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), Humanitarian Service Medal, and a Bronze Star for Navy/Marine Corps Overseas Service. After retirement, Gary lived in Arizona for ten years before returning to Iowa to be closer to family. Some of his interests included counted cross-stitching, reading, and crossword puzzle-solving. He was especially talented at counted cross-stitching and could make any kind of scenery or figure come alive, and in later years even designed a few of his own cross-stitch patterns, deciding the colors and shadings to be used for each. One of his special and uncanny abilities was to never get lost when traveling; family members were amazed and finally just concluded that he had an inborn radar that always kept him on track and was able to find his way home again. His family now rejoices that his radar instinct has led him home to be with his Lord and Savior. Those left to cherish and celebrate his memory include his sister, Sandra Troge; nieces and nephews; and his very special Ames family- Steve, Linde, Megan, and Matthew Adams. He was preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy Show and Mable (Brandau-Show) Truitt; two brothers, Ken Troge and Jack Troge; and three sisters, Beverly Johnson, Ardene Jorgensen and Shirley Boggess. The family extends a heartfelt thanks to the Mary Greeley Oncology Department and the Israel Family Hospice House for their loving care with towards Gary. | ||
