I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.
PERKINS .. .. .. Retired Master Chief Petty Officer, Robert C. Perkins, Jr. passed away May 9, 2026 in his sleep, at age 88, in Naples, FL. He was born in Queens, NY on June 26, 1937 and raised in Jacksonville, MO. In 1955 at age 17, he joined the US Navy, submarine service. In 1959 he became an original crew member on the USS Triton, the first nuclear powered submarine. In 1960, he was a radio man on her historic mission "Operation Sandblast" which circumnavigated Magellan's route around the world submerged. He retired in 1978 after 24 years of service. After he retired he traveled the world by visiting over 135 countries. He is survived by his children, Robert Perkins, Ralph Perkins, Jeanne Pickering, and Elise Perkins, his grandchildren, Thomas, Laura, Alan, Sam, Jack and Mary.
BROWN .. .. .. Jack L. Brown, of St. Johns, died peacefully at home on Sunday, July 5, 2026. Jack was born on November 19, 1955, in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the youngest of four children to Linnie and Barbara (Reed) Brown.
Following school, Jack proudly enlisted in the United States Navy. He was stationed in Charleston, South Carolina, where he worked the nuclear submarine, SS Mariano G. Vallejo. After his military service, he made his home in St. Johns and spent his career as an electromechanical technician, repairing and maintaining printing equipment for John Henry.
Jack met the love of his life, Cindi Beck, through family. They began dating in April 1974 and were united in marriage on December 28, 1974. Together they made their home in St. Johns, where they raised their two children and shared more than 50 years of marriage.
Jack was a private and quiet man who found his greatest happiness at home with those he loved most. He was a hardworking provider who took great pride in caring for his family. Jack could fix just about anything and spent countless hours remodeling and improving their home. His family could always count on him, and he quietly showed his love by taking care of the people who mattered most. He enjoyed bear hunting with his father-in-law, fishing, collecting guns, and riding his motorcycle, but nothing meant more to him than the time he spent with his family.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Cindi Brown; their daughters, Heather (Geoff) Horvath and Shannon (Robert) Smotherman; grandchildren, Victoria (Stephen) Stewart, Christopher (Kari) Cook, Vincent Carmody, Natalie, Robert & Jeffery Smotherman; great-grandchildren, Joshua, Elaina, Maggie, Cora and Athena Stewart, Emma and Jack Cook; sister, Brenda Bridges, as well as extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Linnie Brown Jr. and sister, Sandra Dewaters.
