We are deeply saddened to share that Mark Becker, one of our most dedicated volunteers, has passed away. Mark’s life was shaped by two great loves: his wonderful wife, Laurie, and USS COBIA(his girlfriend). Mark and Laurie, originally from Chicago, chose to retire in Two Rivers after many visits to the WMM to see the submarine. It seemed fitting that this submariner would settle just miles from a submarine. In his service khakis, with coffee nearby, Mark was ready to share the history of COBIA and his own experiences aboard a submarine. Mark and Laurie loved a good thrift store, and he was on the constant lookout for new props to stage on the boat. He dedicated countless hours to ensuring that, when guests stepped aboard Cobia, they were immersed in her years of active service. USS COBIA was always on Mark’s mind. Mark’s genial presence will be deeply missed by our staff and fellow volunteers, but his years of devotion will not be forgotten. Fair winds and following seas, shipmate. Rest your oar; we have the watch. PECK .. .. .. In Loving Memory of Leonard Peck II, Born in Rapid City, South Dakota, Passed Away November 2, 2026, at Age 70. It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Leonard (Len) Peck II on November 2, 2026. Born in Rapid City, South Dakota, Len lived a life that leaves behind a lasting legacy of family, memories, and love. Though his journey on this earth has come to an end, the memories he created and the lives he touched will continue to live on through those who loved him. Len proudly served his country in the United States Navy before retiring. His dedication and service will always be remembered with pride and gratitude. Beyond his military service, Len enjoyed life’s simple pleasures, especially golfing. Spending time on the golf course was something he truly enjoyed, and those memories will remain a special part of the life he lived. Len also had a wonderful sense of humor and loved telling jokes and making people laugh. He enjoyed bringing smiles to the faces of those around him, and his laughter and playful personality will be deeply missed. Those who knew him will remember not only the stories he shared but also the laughter that came with them. Sometimes, the greatest memories are the ones that still make us smile years later. Len leaves behind a loving family who will forever carry his memory in their hearts. He was a father, grandfather, brother, and uncle whose place in the family can never be replaced. He is also lovingly remembered by his partner, Shirley Wright. Len was preceded in death by his beloved mother, Wanda Peck; his father, Leonard Peck; and his brother, Don Peck. Left to cherish his memory are his children: Trinity Peck, Deseraie Cain (Bo), Danielle Girod (Jon), Savannah Gonzalez (Sean), and Christopher Peck. He also leaves behind his six beloved grandchildren: Illeonna Bowden, Emma Cain, Evan Cain, Lily Cain, Bennett Cain, and Juniper. He is also survived by his brother, Kim Peck; his sisters, Tami Bennett, Val Beaner, Renee Ruth, Mary Bustos, and Tina Lame; and numerous nieces and nephews. Len’s passing leaves an emptiness that words cannot describe. There will be moments when his family wishes they could hear his voice one more time, share one more conversation, hear one more joke, or simply have one more day together. Although those moments can no longer be made, the memories will forever remain. A loved one’s life is never measured only by the years they lived, but by the memories they leave behind and the hearts that will continue to hold them close. Len will always be a part of his family’s story, and his memory will live on through his children, grandchildren, siblings, and generations to come. Fair winds and following seas, Len. You served your country; your watch is over. May you rest peacefully, Sailor. Keep the laughter going wherever you are. You are loved, you are missed, and you will never be forgotten. MOES .. .. .. MOES, Julian Howard From June 10, 1927 to Oct 1, 2017, Howard Moes worked hard, told jokes, hiked the world, and selflessly helped people. Born in Hyde Park, Chicago, he joined the Navy at 17 where he befriended Lenny Bruce and served on a submarine, the USS Spinax. After the war, he got his BA at Univ. of Illinois, Navy Pier and his MA in Psychology at Roosevelt University, Chicago. At Navy Pier he met June Rose, his wife of 65 years. In 1955 they moved to LA where he worked for Jewish Vocational Services, helping Holocaust survivors who immigrated to America. In 1973 Howard moved with his young family to Santa Rosa to be the executive director of Redwood Empire Industries for 20 years, and proudly spent his career advocating for disabled adults. He was a president of the CA Assn of Rehabilitation Workshop Facilities and a member of the Sonoma County Mental Health Advisory board. After retiring in the early 1990s, Howard made many lengthy visits to England where he could walk the hills and dales and not be limited by our anachronistic private property laws, and writing poems to sheep while perched on ancient vistas. He would bring that passion back to Sonoma County as an avid volunteer for LandPaths, Bay Area Ridge Trail, Sonoma County Regional Parks, and the Open Space District. He was most proud of two hikes that he designed and led: “Market to Mountain” and “Sea to Sonoma.” Howard’s second open heart surgery at age 80 caused a large stroke that handicapped him for the rest of his life. He adapted to his new normal, walking around his neighborhood with a cane and listing to one side in a Chaplinesque manner. He lived with advanced congestive heart failure for the past year. He left behind an extreme love of the outdoors, world history, classic films, and above all, a good joke. Howard’s life is an example of how we can all embrace change in our imperfect lives. We want to thank beloved caregivers Toni and Maria, and Heartland Hospice’s Sharon and Tina, for their care and compassion in this last chapter of Howard’s life. Howard is survived by his wife June and his two sons, Eric and Adam. BALDWIN .. .. .. John Thomas Moore Baldwin, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, businessman, and community leader, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones. He was 79 years old. Born in New Orleans and raised in Covington, Louisiana, John was the son of Lawrence J. "Chink" Baldwin, Jr. and Elizabeth Lee Watkins Baldwin. A graduate of St. Paul's School and Northwood University, he proudly served in the United States Navy Submarine Force. Following his military service, John returned to Covington and continued his family's legacy as the second-generation owner of Baldwin Motors, established by his father in 1950. For more than five decades, he dedicated himself to serving customers, building lasting relationships, and carrying forward the values of the family business. John was deeply committed to his community, serving on the boards of United Way of SE Louisiana, Louisiana Automobile Dealers Association, the Northshore Community Foundation, the Rotary Club of Covington and the Northshore Food Bank. He was selected by the Louisiana District Judges Association to serve a four-year term as a citizen member on the Louisiana Judiciary Commission. He was a member of Legatus Northshore, among many other organizations. An avid classic car enthusiast and racer, he was very active in many local and national clubs. In 2002, John and fellow Rotarian Craig Babylon helped establish Feeding the Needy, an initiative created to provide holiday meals to local families facing food insecurity. What began by serving approximately 60 families has grown into a cherished Northshore tradition, providing food to thousands of families each Christmas season. Above all, John's greatest joy was his family and beloved wife Nancy Stevens Baldwin. Having known each other since childhood, they went on to share more than 56 years of marriage together. He is survived by Nancy; their three children, John Baldwin Jr. (Christina), Richard Baldwin (Jennifer), and Anne Baldwin Martin (Adam); and four cherished grandchildren, Savannah, Charlotte, Julian, and Devin Baldwin, who lovingly referred to him as “Zoom.” He is also survived by his siblings, Elizabeth Barkerding, Christopher Baldwin, Mary Barkerding, and Sarah Davies. He was preceded in death by his parents. John will be remembered for his devotion to family, generosity, and lifelong commitment to the community he loved. His legacy lives on through his family, the business he helped build, and the countless lives he touched. VICKREY .. .. .. John Jay Vickrey passed away August 24, 2026, at Sheridan Memorial Hospital after a short illness. John was born April 12, 1946, in Alliance, Nebraska, to Lawrence and Alice Schultz Vickrey, joining a brother, Robert Vickrey. John attended school at Assumption Academy (Chadron NE), Bennett County grade school and high school (Martin SD), and graduated from Chadron State College in 1989 with a double major in math and computer programming. At 16 John joined the US Navy, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, father, and brother. He retired in 1981 after a career in submarines, torpedoes, and teaching electronics. He spent several years relaxing, hunting, fishing, and helping others with miscellaneous projects. In 1990 John married Elaine Heath Schaffer in Minot ND where he sold real estate. They moved to Sheridan in 1992 where John worked for Sugarland Development for one year. Then he decided to take up golf. That was his passion for many years, playing golf almost every day, participating in tournaments, and traveling to play on courses in other states.
