The above link goes to the USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.) Facebook page where their members who have gone on “Eternal Patrol” are noted.
I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.
ANDERSON .. .. .. Joseph William Anderson III "Billy" passed away at the age of 79 on April 27, 2025 peacefully at home in Bakersfield, Ca surrounded by his wife and daughters after a battle with cancer.
Billy was born on January 28, 1946 to Joseph and Ruth Anderson in Sacramento, Ca. He was the youngest of three after his brother Stan and sister Diane. The family later moved to Bakersfield when Billy was about 7 years old. After high school, he joined the Navy in 1966 where he was a diesel mechanic on a submarine. His home port was Mare Island Shipyard in Viejo, Ca. He served during the Vietnam War from 1966-1970 where he was later honorably discharged in 1970 with a National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and a First Good Conduct Medal award. Billy then spent most of his career working for Witco/Golden Bear/Tricor Refinery where he retired after 38 years.
Billy met the love of his life, Sharon, shortly after the service where they dated for 5 years before tying the knot in 1974. Together they raised two beautiful daughters, Jessica and Samantha. His life was dedicated to his family but he also loved racing, building/fixing motors (anything mechanical), and traveling to the dunes. Some of his first racing experiences came with life-long friend Roger Mears and the Mears Gang family where he was part of the crew helping build quads, stock cars, and off-road trucks. All family vacations consisted of traveling to the dunes, like Dumont, Glamis, Buttercup, Oregon or Mexico to ride quads and then later RZRs. That is what Billy truly loved to do. He also looked forward to his Monday & Friday morning breakfasts with his buddies Mark, Dennis, and George at Carla's Cafe.
You could always find Billy in his shop watching a race working on one of his many mechanical projects. Most of his buddies knew they could always stop by for a cold beer. Because of his extensive knowledge, everyone always knew to call Billy for help. He was the kind of friend that everyone wanted; he was always there for them.
Billy is survived by his wife Sharon Anderson of 50 years; daughters Jessica Andreotti and Samantha Deiley (Arron); brother Stan Freeman of Redding, Ca; grandchildren Braxton Andreotti, Bronson Andreotti, Sloane Deiley, and soon-to-be grandson Deiley and many more family and friends. Preceded in death by his parents and sister Diane Thompson, many other family members, along with some of his best friends.
We would like to thank our dear friend Carol Mears for her caring nature with her extensive research and help once she learned of his diagnosis and to the Adventist Hospice team.
