At random: "I don't know why we have to be down here on this hold down exercise(at the 60th hour). Hell, I went through this on the Thresher (SS 200) during WW ll with a Nip Sea Going Tug hooked onto our screw guards, trying to lift our butts out of the water. They didn't get us then, and these Tin Cans (ours) ain't going to get us now." -- "Hambone" Hamilton SD1 (SS). "Hambone" made 13 war patrols on USS Remora, SS-487, uttered these words in July 1957 during a hold down exercise off Kobe Japan.

The above link goes to the USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.) Facebook page where their members who have gone on “Eternal Patrol” are noted.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

LARSEN .. .. .. Leif Larsen was born October 5, 1944, in Slagelse, Denmark and died April 28, 2025 in Reno, Nevada. The son of Svend A.M. Larsen and the former Grethe Henriette Petersen, he came to the United States with his family when he was five years old. Growing up in Salt Lake City, he enjoyed skiing, ice skating and running track for South High. He delivered newspapers and Spudnuts for spending money, later sweeping offices, working at an auto parts store and a private airport. At age seventeen he joined the U.S. Navy and went to San Diego for basic training. He served on the USS Kearsarge when it picked up the first space capsule, and then proudly qualified for submarines and served on the USS Greenfish and the USS Haddock. He married Bonnie Cleone in 1968.
Leaving the Navy, Leif enrolled at West Valley College in San Jose only to be recruited by electronic companies. He worked for various companies as an electronics technician, a final test manager and last, at the job he enjoyed most, as a trainer for KLA-TENCOR. Retiring in 1998, he and Bonnie moved to Reno. Noticing that there was a convention of submarine veterans in Reno, he went and met Don Brown, with whom he was intrumental in starting a local group, the Corvina Base. He served in various offices, including Commander, for the Corvina Base, and greatly enjoyed time with his fellow submarine veterans. A family friend took him to the local Danish Lodge, which he soon joined, and where he enjoyed socializing with fellow Danes and served in various offices, being Vice President when he passed away.
Leif was a devoted family man and a good friend. He was kind and generous, he adored his wife Bonnie, and was a source of strength, wisdom, and unconditional love for his daughter and grandchildren. Leif was a good listener, a trusted advisor when asked, and never missed his Sunday phone calls with his sister.
He is predeceased by his parents, stepfather, Jens Svendsen, brother, Stig Larsen, nephew, Shane Larsen, brother-in-law, David Fleming, sister-in-law, Carol Koury, and Danish cousins Tove Kvarnbo and Frank Larsen. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie, his daughter, Karen Larsen Lancaster (Richard), and grandchildren, Karina, Alex and Juliann, all of Reno. Relatives in California include sister, Lis Fleming; brother-in-law, Ray Cleone; niece, Tova Fleming; and nephew, Craig Koury. In Texas, are nephews, Chris Koury and Jensen Zaiger, and niece Jessica Zaiger, in Oregon, niece Erica Boyer. In Denmark, cousins Kirsten Jensen (Ove), Anne Larsen (Kel) and Lone Andersen (Lars) remain behind.

STEPHENS .. .. .. With deep sorrow, we share the passing of Arnold "Dix" Stephens, who departed this life unexpectedly on May 6, 2025, at the age of 80. Born in Brooksville, Florida, on October 3, 1944, Dix began living boldly from a young age. At just 17, he joined the United States Navy and proudly served for 20 years, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. As a nuclear engineer, he served on submarines, destroyers, carriers, high speed ships and supported Cobra Judy on Observation Island. In 1972, he married Judy Stephens, and they spent 33 years together raising their two daughters. After the military, Dix dabbled in various careers, but his heart longed to be a cowboy out West. The family eventually settled in his hometown of Dunnellon, Florida where they built a home on 11 acres and he lived out his Florida cowboy life-complete with horses, cows, chickens, and pigs. Faith and community were central to Dix's life. For many years, the Stephens family was actively involved at First Baptist Church of Dunnellon-attending Sunday school, singing in the choir, and leading Vacation Bible School. It was a place where Dix's steady faith showed up in quiet ways-through service, presence, and devotion. Dix was also a proud Mason for 58 years, faithfully serving in both Dunnellon and Inglis lodges. He held dear the values of brotherhood, integrity, and service. His daughters, Shelly and Kari, have vivid memories of their childhood adventures with Dad; from go-kart racing, exploring Wayne Powell's property, years they spent in the Pacific Northwest-either out on the boat in the Puget Sound or up in the mountains chopping firewood, mowing Sateke Village, conversations while riding horseback, and how much he loved holding babies. Later in life, after he and Judy parted ways, Dix discovered a new rhythm. He developed a deep passion for genealogy, spending countless hours tracing names, dates, and stories, believing that to understand where you're going, you must know where you came from. He authored several books chronicling our family history and the local roots of Dunnellon and Yankeetown. It was during this season that he met Vivien Waldrop, with whom he shared 12 meaningful years-working the land, traveling the country in their RV, and embracing the beauty of simple days and second chances. Dix believed in hard work and simple joys. He knew the value of a good story and a quiet moment. His life is a testimony to the goodness of God in the ordinary: handwritten letters, the hum of a tractor, the smell of fresh cut grass and warm pecan pie. And now, having finished his race, we hope he is at peace-in the presence of the One who makes all things new. He is survived by his daughters, Shelly Pimental and Kari Willis (Greg); his beloved grandchildren Chase Romanini (great-grandchildren Wrin, Casper, and Gavin), Elijah Pimental, Isaac Pimental, Eden Pimental, Wyatt Weiseman, Kati Willis, and Kyle Willis; and his sisters, Ellen Teague (Clayton) David Teague, Dawn Teague Wheeler, Daniel Teague, Dana Teague and Mary Hay (Patrice Hay, Chad Hay). A graveside service will be held in late July at a day and time to be announced. The family welcomes your prayers, memories, and kind words during this time of grief and remembrance. And if you find yourself looking up at a big sky or walking through familiar woods, we hope you'll remember him-and the truth that our stories don't end here.
