At random: During their wartime operations submarines have engaged in some unusual maritime actions. One undersea craft slugged it out with the infantry and field artillery while other submarines destroyed a zeppelin, a bus, and a railroad train.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate. 

BINGHAM .. .. .. Franklin P. Bingham, 95, of South Whitehall Twp., died Saturday, February 7, 2026 at EverTrue Luther Crest, South Whitehall Twp. He was the husband to the late Marilyn M. (McKinnis) Bingham, his loving and caring wife of 67 years, who recently passed away on January 16, 2026. Born in Slippery Rock, Pa, on Memorial Day, May 30, 1930, he was the son of the late John H. and Lois (Heyl) Bingham.
He graduated from Slippery Rock Campus High School and Grove City College with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering. He retired from Air Products and Chemicals, where he worked for 31 years. He served in the US Navy Submarine service on The USS Cobbler SS344. He also worked for IBM in their Development Labs. He was a member of the Instrument Society of America, where he served as past president of the Lehigh Chapter of Society. He was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Allentown. He served on the church boards as a Deacon, Trustee, and an Elder. He also volunteered at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Cedar Crest for over 25 years. He was a sports fan of Penn State sports, Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Flyers.
Survivors: son James F. and his wife Susan of Yardley, Pa; daughter Debra S., and her husband Anthony Mastropieri of Cetronia, Pa; grandchildren Francis J. Bingham, Amanda S. Bingham and Leila A. Mastropieri; great granddaughters Freyja Bingham and Aurelia Bingham and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother John H. Jr., and sister Emily Overmeyer.

PAUL .. .. .. Hermon, ME - Duane John Paul, 79, of Duncan, Oklahoma passed away Jan. 27, 2026 in Bangor, Maine. Born Sept. 4, 1946, to Adrian and Jeanette Paul in Oregon, Duane grew up with a passion for music and a love for the sea. Soon after graduating high school, he joined the navy where he proudly served as a sonar technician on various submarines.
Duane married the love of his life, Lonna Paul who brought him endless laughter and joy. In addition to being a proud Navy veteran, he was always creative at heart and could play any instrument he could get his hands on. Duane enjoyed music, woodworking and had a passion for making and playing hand-made Native American flutes. He always had his hand-made flute with him and playing heartfelt songs for all around him became some of his most treasured memories.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents, Adrian and Jeanette Paul; beloved wife, Lonna Paul; and son Kevin Paul. He is survived by his son, Scott Paul; daughter, Beth Weathers; as well as many close friends in Oklahoma and Maine.

BURGER .. .. .. James C. Burger, age 82, passed away peacefully, on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones, at The Heritage Manor.
James was born August 3, 1943 in Warren, a son of Samuel E. Burger and Geraldine A. Medaugh Burger.
James was a member of Central Christian Church of Hubbard and a 1961 Hubbard High School graduate. He was a submarine Commander with the U.S. Navy, retiring in 1983. He was a member of the Hubbard American Legion Post 51, the Hubbard VFW Post 3767 and was an avid golfer and enjoyed bowling.
James leaves his beloved wife, Barbara Gordon Burger, whom he married June 22, 1963; two sons, James C. (Megan) Burger Jr., of Creston, Ohio and Jeffrey (Toni) Burger of Seven Hills, Ohio; four grandchildren, Roxane Paavola, Sam Burger, Lucas Burger and Sarah Burger; and two great-grandchildren, Ava and Finn Paavola.
James was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Sandra Koebel.
