I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.
SMITH .. .. .. After a long and determined battle against cancer, Stephane William Smith was reunited, on March 17, 2026, with his daughter, Jennifer Lynn, who preceded him to our Heavenly Father’s Eternal Home 30 years ago, one week shy of her 2nd birthday.
Along with his daughter, waiting to welcome him were his parents, Edwige (Edie) & Wesley B. Smith, Sr.; his maternal grandparents, Boleslaw & Leocaidie (Szymczak) Koch; his paternal grandparents, Guy & Mildred (Bryan) Smith; his niece and nephew, Niki and Michael Smith; multiple aunts, uncles, cousins and many civilian & military friends, and of course, our Lord & Savior, Yeshua, Jesus Christ.
What an amazing, glorious time he is having reunited and finally able to look upon our Heavenly Father’s face and have his questions answered and his sorrow washed away.
In 13 days, on March 30th, Stephane would have celebrated his 66th birthday, and he still will, just with the Lord singing to him in person and partaking of the cake, not chocolate, of course.
Those that will miss him are his brother, Wesley B. Smith, Jr. & Claudia V. Genovese-Smith; his nephew, Nathaniel Smith; his niece, Rachel Smith and his great-niece, Hope Bruce; his aunts, Barbara Wodel & Judith Smith; his uncle, William Smith, Sr. and aunt, Donna Smith and multiple cousins, friends & coworkers.
Stephane enlisted in the Navy after graduating from Ellington High School, where he was the Drum Major his Senior Year, playing the Saxophone & Trombone in the band.
He was a Sonar Tech on two different nuclear-powered attack Submarines, the USS Puffer & USS Tautog. Which in later years, he shared memories, but for many years, he would say, “It is called the ‘Silent Service’ for a reason … missions were secret.”
After he was honorably discharged, he began his employment career with multiple companies, gaining a diverse resume of skills from corporate trouble shooting in Tech, to the glass manufacturing industry and the last being Country Pure Foods in Ellington, CT.
SCARANO .. .. .. William M. Scarano, retired Chief of the Groton City Fire Department passed away in his sleep, at his residence on March 20, 2026..
He was the husband of Ann Bassett Scarano.

Bill joined the U.S. Navy Reserves in 1943 in his Junior Year of High School at Fitch High School. Bill celebrated his 101st birthday last month.
Bill went to Boot Camp in Newport RI and Basic Submarine School in Groton CT. Following Basic Enlisted Submarine School he reported to USS SEA LION (SS 315) under construction at EB. Bill Qualified in Submarines in 1944 abord USS SEA LION. In 1944 SEA LION headed west to the Pacific to join the fight. Bill served onboard during War Patrols 1 – 6. After the end of the war, Bill stayed onboard USS SEA LION serving in California until his Honorable Discharge in March 1946 when he returned home to Groton CT.
