The above link goes to the USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.) Facebook page where their members who have gone on “Eternal Patrol” are noted.
I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.
SCHALLES .. .. .. Long time Ottawa Hills resident John Peter Schalles, Sr., died May 20, 2026. The son of Oscar and Helen, he was born March 1, 1925, in West Bend, WI. Growing up during the Great Depression was an eye-opening educational experience for John. Before graduating from West Bend H.S., John was active in the Boy Scouts, earning the Eagle Scout badge. He also lettered in 3 sports in high school. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and completed 3 years of service in WWII as an Electronic Technician aboard the submarine USS Cobbler.
Upon honorable discharge from the Navy, he entered Dartmouth College, graduating in 1950 (BA) and 1951 (MBA) from its Amos Tuck School of Business. While at Dartmouth he was a member of Psi Upsilon and lettered three years on the track team.
John pursued a career in sales and marketing, completing his career as a Market Research Manager with Owens Corning, when he retired in 1987. He served on the boards of the East Side Mental Health Center, the Dental Center, and 8 years as an Ottawa Hills councilman.
The allure of golf was strong in John's life, beginning as a caddie in 1936. He played at least one round every year thereafter while collecting 5 holes-in-one and a lot of golf balls. He was a member of Highland Meadows Golf Club and the Toledo Country Club for many years.
He married Elizabeth Cummins LaMontagne in 1958. They were blessed with three children, John, Jr., in Ann Arbor, MI; Edward (Linda) in Wayne, PA; and Caroline (Todd) in Asheville, NC; and three granddaughters, Hannah (Brit) in Brooklyn, NY; Julia (Steve) in Seattle, WA; and Sadie in Philadelphia, PA.
Preceding John in death were his brothers, Clarence, Robert, and Henry (WWII); and sister, Mary (Bechwar).
LOVE .. .. .. Thomas Orville Love, age 85, of Naugatuck, entered into rest on Thursday, May 21, 2026, at his home. He was the devoted husband of Linda (Smith) Love with whom he had celebrated 50 years of marriage last September. Tom was born on September 21, 1940, in Georgetown, Texas, son of the late Orville and Thrace (Howell) Love. He was a Texas resident until he left to serve his country with honor and pride in the U.S. Navy.
Tom was stationed in Hawaii, San Francisco, and eventually Connecticut during his years of service. After a three-year deployment aboard a nuclear submarine to Scotland, he returned to Connecticut and worked for many years as an Independent Distributor Partner for Pepperidge Farm, before working for many years for USPS as a Postal Clerk in Naugatuck.
Tom's love of the water became something his entire family shared. He, Linda, and their children created many cherished memories boating together, where Tom always seemed most at peace- finding joy, freedom, and calm on the water.
Together, Tom and Linda traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Caribbean, and across the United States, especially enjoying visits to National Parks and reunions with the veterans Tom had served alongside. Texas was always a favorite destination, where many close friends and family lived.
At home, Tom was a natural tinkerer, who could fix just about anything. He had a warm heart, a gentle sense of humor, and a kindness and generosity that touched everyone around him. More than anything, Tom treasured spending time with his family, creating a lifetime of memories filled with laughter, adventure, and love.
In addition to his wife, Linda of Naugatuck, Tom is survived by his beloved children, Mark Love and Abby Cervone, and her husband, Brian; and his cherished grandsons, Joseph and Maxwell Cervone, all of Naugatuck. He also leaves many loving family members in Texas. He was predeceased by his sister, Bernice Lyons. |
