The above link goes to the USSVI (United States Submarine Veterans, Inc.) Facebook page where their members who have gone on “Eternal Patrol” are noted.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

BURGERT .. .. .. Duane Ray Burgert, born on February 21, 1936, in Three Rivers, Michigan, passed away peacefully on July 2nd, 2026 at the age of 90. Duane lived a life defined by service, dedication, adventure, and unwavering love for his family. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 27 years, a chapter of his life that remained one of his greatest sources of pride. Even years after his retirement from the Navy aboard submarines, a chapter of his life that remained one of his greatest sources of pride. He never missed an opportunity to share stories from his time in service or encourage others to consider a career in the military. Following his military service, Duane built a second career at Steelcase, where he worked until his retirement. Retirement never slowed him down. Duane continued giving back to his community through his volunteer work with the Fleet Reserve Association (FRA), the Wyoming Police Department Volunteer Program, and the Honor Guard Rifle Squad. He was also a proud member of the United States Submarine Veterans (USSVI), where he was recognized for 50 years of dedicated membership. His continued commitment to veterans and his community reflected the values of honor, service, and camaraderie that guided him throughout his life. Duane shared a loving marriage with his beloved wife, Mary Ann. Together they built a family that became the center of his world. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann; his children, Donny (Debra) Rasmussen, Howard Burgert, Sherrie (Denny) Frantz, Tammy (David) Thompson. He was a proud grandfather to Mark, Tom, Cora, John, Jessee, Brandon, Allison, Krista, Ashley, and Jacob, as well as a loving great-grandfather who was known as (GGP) to Kaydence, Jordan, Kayden, Jackson, Jolene, Makari, Lukka, and Peyton. He also leaves behind his faithful companion, Gator, who brought him much comfort and joy. Duane embraced every opportunity to explore the world. Whether traveling overseas or taking road trips across the country with Mary Ann in their motorhome, he believed life was meant to be experienced. After years of traveling, Duane and Mary Ann found joy in a life of adventure closer to home. They became proud snowbirds, spending their winters in Arcadia, Florida, and their summers in Byron Center, Michigan. Along the way, they built lasting friendships in both communities, creating a second family wherever they went. Anyone who spent more than a few minutes with Duane was likely to hear one of his favorite Navy stories, and if you stayed long enough, there was a good chance he'd try to recruit you. It was part of his charm and one of the many ways he'll be fondly remembered. While at home or on the road, he enjoyed golfing, cheering on the Michigan Wolverines and the Detroit Lions, and spending time with the ones he loved. Whether exploring new places in their motorhome or simply enjoying time with friends, Duane treasured the relationships and memories they made together. His stories, quick wit, and enthusiasm for the Navy were trademarks that family and friends will always remember. Duane measured his life not by the places he traveled or the years he lived, but by the people he loved and the lives he touched. Through his service to his country, his devotion to his family, and his commitment to his community, he left behind a legacy of honor, generosity, and kindness that will continue for generations. His stories, laughter, and steadfast spirit will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Butch enlisted in the U.S. Navy on August 29, 1962, just before his senior year of high school. He received his GED, trained as an electrician in San Diego and attended submarine school in New London, CT. In Rochelle, he met the love of his life, Judith Kay Beardin. They married on October 3, 1970. Butch and Judy had two daughters, Hope and Kimberly. He used to help Judy’s father, Al, in the fall, catching corn from the combine. He moved his family to Elk Grove Village to work for a machine tool rebuilder, designing and wiring electrical panels, and doing the machine wiring. Butch eventually settled his family in Onalaska, WI to be near his father, who retired in Wauzeka, WI. Butch always said his greatest accomplishments were his children, grandchildren, and soon-to-be six great-grandchildren. While he will be remembered for his spirited and opinionated nature, his true legacy is one of hard work, loyalty, and boundless love. A quick-witted, master storyteller with a magnetic charm and warm smile, he could find joy in the smallest moments and had a tale for every occasion. If Butch loved you, you felt it deeply; he would do absolutely anything for his friends and family, consistently putting family first. He and Judy cherished their time traveling, reading, and enjoying each other’s company, especially when sharing moments with their grandchildren. Butch also looked forward to occasional target practice and was a proud Endowment Life Member of the NRA, as well as a devoted Chicago Bears fan. We will forever miss his big heart, infectious laugh, and wonderful sense of humor.
