At random: Probably the most expensive ballast ever carried by a ship was two tons of gold and eighteen tons of silver coins carried by the U.S. submarine TROUT while on a trip from Corregidor to Pearl Harbor early in World War II. TROUT had removed her moveable ballast to allow for a larger cargo of ammunition to be transported for the defenders on the embattled island. Lcdr. Fenno, TROUT's CO, planned on replacing the ballast with sand bags, but found none were available. The gold and silver from the Bank of the Philippines was substituted as ballast, which also solved the problem of removing the treasure to a safe place prior to invasion by the enemy.

I’ll keep my work here going, trying to get others who were not USSVI members. You’re encouraged to look there as well as here! Obviously, there’ll be some I miss and some I duplicate.

MCCLOY .. .. .. Robert Albert McCloy Sr., 93, of Leesburg, FL, passed away peacefully on July 11, 2026. Born on December 29, 1932, in Buffalo, NY, and raised in Millville, NJ, Bob lived a life defined by faith, family, service, and friendship.
Bob proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a submarine sailor for 20 years during the Korean and Vietnam eras, retiring in 1971 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer. During his distinguished naval career, he served aboard the USS Henley (DD-762), USS Intrepid (CV-11), USS Nereus (AS-17), USS Remora (SS-487), USS Sam Houston (SSBN-609), USS Daniel Boone (SSBN-629), and USS Seahorse (SSN-669). His military career reflected his unwavering dedication, discipline, and commitment to serving his nation. Following his retirement from the Navy, he continued his career in public service with the New Jersey Department of Corrections, retiring from the State of New Jersey in 1987.
Bob shared 46 years of marriage with his first wife, Margaret (McClure), with whom he built a loving home and raised four children. Following Margaret's passing in 1997, he later married Carmela (Infantino), who preceded him in death in 2019.
A devoted Catholic, Bob was a faithful member of St. Paul Catholic Church in Leesburg, FL. His love of the sea did not end with his Navy service. Throughout retirement, he enjoyed traveling the world on cruises and discovering new destinations. An avid storyteller who always kept up with current events, Bob loved watching football and baseball and especially enjoyed following the FIFA World Cup. Whether he was planning his next adventure, watching The Lawrence Welk Show, or striking up a conversation with someone new, he found joy in life's simple pleasures. Bob never met a stranger. He was known for his friendly nature, wonderful sense of humor, and genuine love of talking with people, especially fellow veterans. His warmth and kindness left a lasting impression on everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert McCloy and Elizabeth Ann (Swink) McCloy; his son, William R. McCloy; his brother, William McCloy; and his sister, Beverly Ann Brenneman.
He is survived by his son, Robert McCloy Jr. (Nancy); his daughters, Beverly Adams and Patricia Cope (Robert); his grandchildren, Rick (Caryn), Jennifer (Kevin), Chris (Rachel), Kelly, Patrick, Andrea, Michael, and Tabatha; his eight great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and dear friends.

CHRISTINA .. .. .. Master Chief Robert Edward Christina, USN (Ret.)
Waterford-Master Chief Robert Edward Christina, USN (Ret.), made his final deployment on July 11, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on January 15, 1941, in New London, Connecticut, Bob was the son of Rosario and Josephine (Connata) Christina. He grew up in the Shaw Street neighborhood and graduated from New London High School with the Class of 1959.
At the wedding of a mutual friend, Bob met the love of his life, Mary Cercena. They were married on April 27, 1963, and shared more than 63 years of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion.
Bob dedicated more than 32 years to the United States Navy Submarine Force. He began in the Navy Reserve while still in high school, gaining early experience aboard World War II diesel-electric submarines, then entered active duty and qualified aboard USS Carbonero. Over the course of his career, he also served aboard USS Becuna, USS Benjamin Franklin, USS Stonewall Jackson, and USS Lafayette (Blue and Gold Crews), and earned the Navy Expeditionary Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, and National Defense Service Medal. He later served as an instructor at Basic Enlisted Submarine School, advancing to Chief Torpedoman. He then took on several leadership roles at Naval Submarine Base New London, where he mentored and supported the sailors under his charge.
In 1981, Bob advanced to Senior Chief Fire Control Technician and completed Drug and Alcohol counseling school before being named Director of the Counseling and Assistance Center at Naval Submarine Base New London. In June 1985, he advanced to Master Chief Fire Control Technician.
One of Bob's proudest accomplishments was achieving his lifelong goal of serving as Chief of the Boat aboard USS Scamp, beginning in December 1985. During this nine-month tour, the boat completed a shipyard refit availability and an Operational Reactor Safety Examination, deployed to the southern hemisphere as part of Unitas XII, and continued on to the North Atlantic, where the crew took part in the rescue of sailors from a sunken merchant ship. The tour concluded at Naval Submarine Base Bangor, Washington, where the boat was decommissioned.
He then returned to the counseling field at Naval Submarine Base New London, serving as Command Fitness Coordinator, Assistant Military Personnel Officer, and Drug and Alcohol Program Advisor, before retiring from the Navy on June 30, 1992.
After retiring from the Navy, Bob stayed active in his community. He served as Director of the Lyme Shores Fitness Center and as sexton of St. Matthias Church in East Lyme, where he took particular pride in helping build the church on Chesterfield Road, retiring upon its completion in 2002. Caring for each of their seven grandchildren in their earliest years was something Bob and Mary treasured, and something he counted among his greatest joys.
Bob and Mary traveled throughout the United States and Europe, returning often to his beloved Maine and Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. He was a member and past Grand Knight of St. Matthias Knights of Columbus Council 11173, Submarine Veterans USSVI Groton Base, BPOE #360 New London and a past member of the East Lyme Board of Education. Bob loved skiing, hunting, fishing and especially golfing with friends. He treasured meeting Arnold Palmer at Bay Hill, where they reminisced about their shared military service and rounds played at Shennecossett Golf Course.
Bob cherished his family above all else. He was predeceased by his parents and his infant son, Michael John. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary; his children, Kathleen; Joseph and his wife, Mary Ellen, and their daughter, Abigail; James and his wife, Penni, and their daughters, Angela and Alayna; Robert and his wife, Ailsa, and their children, Sarah and Jack; and Monica and her children, Alyson and Matthew. He is also survived by his sister, Gloria Russell, and by many nephews, extended family, and close friends.

WUNSCH .. .. .. Charles Steven Wunsch, 77, of Pinehurst, passed peacefully on Saturday, July 11, 2026.
Born in 1949, son to a U.S. Army soldier and former Army nurse, Chuck traveled throughout his early youth, finally settling to claim Bordentown, New Jersey as his home. He participated in the Drum and Bugle Corps through middle and high school as well as playing baseball, basketball and golf. He later earned an Electrical Engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute while also completing the U.S. Navy’s ROTC program during college.
Chuck received his commission as an Ensign and entered the Navy in 1971, and upon graduation of the nuclear power and submarine training schools, first served aboard the USS Plunger in 1973. During his Navy career, he also served with the Precommissioning Unit of the USS Memphis in 1976, as the Engineer of the USS Los Angeles in 1977 and the Executive Officer of the USS Francis Scott Key in 1982. Chuck ultimately earned the position of Commanding Officer of the USS Kamehameha from 1986 through 1989. Decorations received during his career include the Meritorious Service Medal, three Navy Commendation Medals and the Navy Achievement Medal.
After retiring from the Navy at the rank of Commander in 1994, Chuck settled with his family in Pinehurst. He continued to work, spending a few years as a bookseller before becoming a Notary Public and business manager of the local UPS Store. True retirement came in the late 2010’s. Throughout life he was an avid golfer, having scored multiple holes-in-one and winning multiple Pinewild Club Championships, the most recent in 2023. Additional achievements include runner-up in Pinehurst’s 2006 North and South Senior Open Division Championship, runner-up of the 2008 Moore County Match Play Championship Senior Division and (with teammate Bernie Schultz) winner of the 2019 CGA North Carolina Super Senior Four-Ball 70+ Division. He was also a fan of all Philadelphia sports teams, particularly the Flyers and Eagles. Being from the Garden State, he took pride in maintaining his home’s yard and cultivating a haven for the local bird population.
Chuck is preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Anna. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years Marilyn, his son Jeff and daughter-in-law Holly. He is also survived by sister Pamela (Bill), sister-in-law Merle (Paul), brother-in-law Joe (Debi), with many nieces, nephews and countless friends.
