Born on July 8, 1942, in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Ron was the son of George and Gertrude Yates and the brother of Russell and Robin. Ron is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Barbara; his children, Heather Southwick (Bill), John Yates (Mandy), and Christine Robertson (Craig); and his grandchildren, Caitlin, Taylor, and Haley Southwick, and Jack and Chloe Robertson. He is also survived by his brother, Russell Yates, and his nephew, Ryan Yates. Ron earned both a BS and a BSEE from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut. Following graduation, he served as a submarine Naval officer aboard the USS Tinosa. He then went on to earn an MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth, beginning a career and life defined by intellectual curiosity, a strong sense of purpose, and a deep commitment to his family. After Tuck, he worked in leadership positions in the electronics industry for over 40 years, culminating in his role as CEO of the Walchem Group, later Iwaki America a consortium of three manufacturing companies offering a broad range of water treatment and control products. It was truly his "dream job," fulfilling his long-term goal to work for a privately-owned business. Under Ron's leadership, Walchem rose to become the North American leader in industrial water treatment instrumentation, chemical metering and internet-based remote control technologies. It was his privilege to work with the Jewett family as their joint venture with a Japanese company flourished. Ron made over 50 trips to Asia, Europe, and South America, and loved working with such a varied group of people. Throughout his career and retirement, Ron devoted his time to nonprofit organizations that worked to address poverty and homelessness. For 19 years, he volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in various leadership roles and spent five years on the Board of City Mission Boston, including as president. In 2013, he co-founded New Life Furniture Bank of MA, a nonprofit that helps individuals and families transition out of homelessness in the Greater Boston area. He continued to play an active leadership role in the organization until his death. He was a role model for kindness, respecting and serving others, and creating community. His greatest love was his family. Barbara was the love of his life, and they were incredible partners in everything they did. A loving father and grandfather, he actively supported his family's endeavors and celebrated their accomplishments. Longtime residents of Acton, MA, they raised their children there before moving to Medfield, MA. They also cherished time spent at their home on Long Lake in Harrison, ME, where countless memories were made with their children and grandchildren. Ron's faith was very important to him and served as a constant guide throughout his life. He was an active member of Pilgrim Church in Sherborn, MA, and also attended First Congregational Church in Bridgton, ME. More recently, he also contributed to the Bridgton community by volunteering his time and organizational skills to the Rufus Porter Museum of Art and Ingenuity. His passions included sailing and golf. An avid athlete, he enjoyed playing basketball and squash, and rooting for the Red Sox and Patriots. A prolific reader, he was always recommending books to family and friends. He especially appreciated a beautiful sunset over the water, and he and Barbara loved exploring the world together. He was never short on grand stories, whether recounting his childhood memories or sharing priceless tales from his days serving aboard Navy submarines, all delivered with a humble demeanor and a playful sense of humor. MARSHALL .. .. .. Rev. Wallace W. (Bill) Marshall, Jr. died Saturday, October 17, 2026, in Morehead City, NC after a four-year battle with cancer. He was 90 years of age, the son of Wallace and Katherine Marshall of Reidsville, NC. Although he was a native of Richmond VA, Bill grew up in Reidsville where he attended elementary, middle and Reidsville High School as a member of the Class of 1954. Both he and his family were members of the First Presbyterian Church of Reidsville. After high school he attended the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, graduating in 1958 and receiving a commission in the US Navy. After serving in the submarine service, he resigned his commission in 1963 to pursue theological studies and the Christian ministry. Following a one-year Rockefeller Theological Fellowship at Union Theological Seminary in New York, NY, he attended Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia where he met his wife, Gabriele. He received a Master of Divinity degree in 1968. Graduation was followed by ordination to the gospel ministry the same year. After 35 years of serving pastorates in Massachusetts, Alabama, Maryland and North Carolina he and Gabriele retired to the coastal town of Morehead City, NC where Billy enjoyed ocean fishing in his own boat and preached locally for 10 more years and was active in the seaman’s service ministry in the Port of Morehead City. He was also engaged for over a year in training the leader of a local church plant in South Carolina for ordination. Afterwards, he engaged in the weekly training of an indigenous Nicaraguan missionary to remote regions of the country. Although he had grown up in the Presbyterian Church his life was dramatically altered by the required reading of John Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion in its entirety in a systematic theology course at Union Seminary in New York. Throughout his 45-year ministry he sought to be faithful to that system of doctrine which had made a deep impression on him in the course of his theological studies. He is survived by his wife, Gabriele of 59 years (the former Gabriele Rosenau of Philadelphia); sons, Wallace Marshall, III, of Charleston, SC, Calvin Marshall and wife, Karine, of Richmond, VA; along with his daughters, Michal Strickland and husband, Thomas, of Raleigh, NC, Ann Marshall of Lutherville-Timonium, MD, Katherine Laney, of Morrisville, NC and Sarah Mannion and husband, Luke of Briscow, VA. He is also survived by his sister, Katherine Flack of Atlanta, GA (formerly Katherine Marshall of Reidsville, NC) and 14 grandchildren. Billy was preceded in death by his youngest son, Jonathan in 2019 and Wallace’s late wife, Vartika who died in 2024. Edited by Coyote 2026-10-19 3:58 PM | ||
