At random: Nautilus has long been a popular name for a submarine. Some of the more famous of these are Robert Fulton's NAUTILUS (1800), Jules Verne's fictional Nautilus, and the NAUTILUS of Sir Hubert Wilkins in which he attempted a voyage to the North Pole under the ice (1931). There have also been three U.S. submarines of that name, including the world's first nuclear powered submarine built by the Electric Boat Division.

Anyone know which Submarine is at the Science Museum in Portland Oregon? My son just sent me a photo of it but it doesn't appear to have any numbers painted on the Sail
Thanks in Advance

Hi Doc, I looked at some photos of the Submarine. It has 581 painted on the sail. That number belongs to the USS Blueback. Barbel Class served 1959 to 1990.

I must have just missed seeing her at Pearl Harbor from '67 to late '68.  During most of that time the Barbel was home ported there, and the only Barbel class I ever saw in Oahu.  I never wanted to be on a Nuc after I reported to the Pickerel, but being on a Barbel class boat I think I would have enjoyed.

I helped prepare Blueback for display many years ago and was a docent for many years, when I lived in Oregon.
If you visit, there are two tours available. The regular tour is under an hour long. There was a Technical Tour that is available that lasted several hours and included visits to areas not available with the normal tour. The Tech Tour, which I did, was only available once a month, but I don't know about today.

In '65 when I signed up for the USNR at Terminal Island our reserve boat there was the Roncador with all her batteries removed, and replaced by concrete.  It still floated like a cork, but it was where we trained and held classes one weekend a month for our in-active part of duty.  Did anybody ever serve on it?  My fading memory does remember Ric taking a shower on it when he was in transit?

A few months later before active duty myself and my two buddies signed up voluntarily to go to boot camp, and submarine school during summer break from regular school.  We were sent to Hunters Point, and at that time there was another submarine tied up there that never went to sea. We used it for training purposes at times.  I've tried to remember which submarine it was, so I can look up its history - does anybody know which submarine it was, or have a clue how to find out?  I've lost track with everybody I joined with then, but there were a few guys on here from old Hunters Point.

I went to submarine SG school in the summer of 65 at Hunters Point.
We were in a barracks near one that had the men off a boat in drydock. They taught us how to cool beer with a CO2 fire extingisher.

Curious about the Roncador. Was that a Reserve boat tied up in Brooklyn ,NY late 50s or early 60s.

Never mind about Roncador. My brain took extra time to kick in. I believe it was Ronquil.

Tom,
I don't think so.  After being built on the east coast it spent most of its years away.  In nearly all of the 60's it was at Terminal Island where we'd spene one weekend a month being sailors throwing heavies and studying in the AB.  The sail for some reason was put on display on the east coast after than, and for some reason last I heard the sail was on display in San Diego. In its movie life the Roncador was painted pink, and portrayed the Sea Tiger in Operation Petticoat.

Chris, we might have been in the same class.  However, we missed the beer cooling session.  I remember an Italian submarine being overhauled while we were there.  After boot camp, before Sub School we got our first liberty, and I was pissed - first the Jar Heads at the gate had given us a ration, and then as we were waiting for the SF bus all these good looking chicks are at the gate in their cars picking up the scroungiest looking Italian sailors I ever saw.

Chris, I too went to sub school at Hunter's Point during the summer of 65. I have a lot of fond memories of that time. What I really liked was its location--- an easy bus ride to my hometown in the East Bay, where my girlfriend (and now my wife of 58 years) lived.

USS Ling, I believe in Brooklyn. USS Rovandor was in Long Beach if I'm not mistaken. She did some work for TV series, SILENT SERVICE.
