At random: A submarine, the TURTLE, was employed by the American revolutionary army to attack the British. It was built by David Bushnell at Saybrook, Connecticut, just a few miles from the present site of Electric Boat Division of the General Dynamics Corporation, and the U.S. Naval Submarine Base.

VEATCH, Jr., Stanley Taylor , 81, passed away on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 in Orange Park, FL. Born in Gainesville, FL, Mr. Veatch was a resident of Jacksonville since 1956. He served his country in the US Navy during World War II and Korea in the submarine service. He retired as a commercial real estate manager with Winn Dixie Stores in 1996 after 38 years service. He was predeceased by his son, Steven Hunter Veatch in 1980. Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Bobbie; daughters, Martha Veatch, Marcia Arnold and Adrienne Veatch; grandchildren, Tamara, Lori, Kailani and 5 great grandchildren. Funeral services in celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2008, 10:00 AM in the chapel of JACKSONVILLE MEMORY GARDENS FUNERAL HOME, 111 Blanding Blvd., Orange Park, FL. Family and friends will visit at the funeral home on Friday, September 5, 2008 from 5 until 7 PM. In lieu of flowers, kindly make donations in Mr. Veatch's memory to the American Cancer Society, 2850 Isabella Blvd., Suite 20, Jacksonville Beach, FL 32250.
