HIGGINS Vertis H., 84, a retired Chevron Oil employee and founder of Higgins Seafood, died Friday, September 5, 2008 of heart failure at Central Arkansas Veterans Hospital in Little Rock, AR, where he was evacuated to due to Hurricane Gustav. He was born in Washington, PA and lived in Lafitte, LA for 54 years before moving to Marrero, LA following Hurricane Katrina for the last 3 years. He was a member of Abundant Life Church in Harvey, LA. Mr. Higgins was a Navy Veteran of World War II. He was a life member of U.S. Submarine Veterans of WWII where he held local and state offices. He was also a life member of V.F.W. and American Legion. Survivors include his wife, Gloria Bailly Higgins; 3 sons: Vertis Patrick, Lanny Harold (Marilyn) and Denny James (Dottie); 6 grandchildren: Tiffany Kuhn (Bruce Jr.), Lanny Jr., Shaun (Jenny), Holly Breaux (Joshua), Tia and Patrick; 2 great-grandchildren: Bailly and Wildey Kuhn and another expected at the end of the year. Mr. Higgins donated his body to science. There will be no wake or funeral services. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, September 20, 2008 at Abundant Life Church, 2301 Par 3 Dr, Harvey, LA at 2:00 p.m. Please no flowers, if you like you can donate to a charity in his name.

GUGERT, George L., 58, passed away on Wednesday, July 30, 2008. George was born August 23, 1949, in Jackson, MS to Francis A. Gugert Jr. and Betty F. Gugert. He was the third of six children, all boys. George was a graduate of HV Cooper High School, Hinds Jr. College and received his Bachelor Degree from California State University at Fullerton, CA. George enlisted in the United States Navy and served several tours of duty as a submariner, and on a scientific expedition at the South Pole. After completing his six years in the Navy, George settled in Southern California to be close to his brothers. George had been employed in the shipping repair industry where his travels took him virtually around the world working on propulsions systems. He is pre-deceased by his parents and brothers, Frank and Tom. George is survived by his brothers, Hank in Arizona, Gerald in New York, and Mike in Southern California; his children, Doss and James Gugert of Kansas City and Valerie Kruger of St. Louis, and their spouses; and many cousins, nieces and nephews of California, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, New York and Tennessee. His wife, Sue Gugert-Brown of Indiana, also survives George. Visitation services will take place Friday, September 12, 2008, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home Chapel in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Memorial Services will take place Saturday, September 13, 2008, at 11:00 am. The burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Vicksburg, MS where he will rest with his parents and siblings.
