At random: USS R-6 was fitted the first prototype US submarine snorkel at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the closing months of the European part of WW II in April / May 1945 and successfully tested it off Fort Lauderdale, Fl. as the war against Japan ended in August 1945. The snorkel was removed from the USS R-6 and she was decommissioned and scrapped in September 1945. |

Master and Commander Posts: 1662 | Subject: Fibromyalgia Anybody out here have any familiarity with Fibromyalgia? About five years ago I had it in my shoulders. Doctors said it was most likely that, but evidently there is no test for it. By avoiding using weight for elevating and rotating my arms it seemed to disappear. I read where Fibromyalgia attack usually a few places. The Monday after the Super Bowl while doing my morning the pain became intense in my lower right ankle. I went to emergency after three days because of the pain not easing, and for no apparent reason. X-rays and blood clot tests were negative - I guess that was good news. Then it dawned on me that is it may be Fibromyalgia, and it has flared up. Problem with it being in the ankle it limits my ability to walk without pain. The pain is when I out weight on it, and if x-rays showed I had a fracture in my ankle I'd believe it. I have never had anything like this before, and I know no one that has. I believe it is a form of rheumatoid arthritis that we know very little about. In emergency the doctor speculated it might be a muscle ailment caused by over taxing my leg. Problem is I've been walking a mile a day for a year. At home I remembered the pain I had in my shoulders and realized this is similar. I just canceled an appointment I had with a Physical Therapist because I think there is nothing they can do, The doctor thought maybe my walk could be altered to reduce strain on my right leg. I never brought up fibromyalgia during my visit. Again does anyone have any practical firsthand experience with this? I have never had anything last this long before, and there is no cure. It can be somewhat controlled by exercise, lack of stress, and proper sleep. I had never heard of this before, and hope that I'm just having a flash of pain. Anybody ever have this?

COMSUBBBS Posts: 2974 Location: Liverpool, England | Subject: RE: Fibromyalgia Hi! Gil, I empathize with your problem mi amigo. My particular cross to bear in old age is arthritis which is very painful in joints and muscles. Doctors love nothing more than to prescribe painkillers but to be honest they do little to alleviate the pain and discomfort you suffer when required. The medical profession is telling us that after many years of research, they still know no more than when they began looking for root causes all that time ago. Not being familiar with your condition I looked it up on the Internet and found a general ignorance from the medical fraternity as to what it was or how it can be effectively treated or prevented. One site I found out of many was the National Health Service (NHS) which did offer practical advice. I include its link below not because I think the NHS knows better than US medical sites but because they are both pretty ignorant in this respect. I just thought another point of view might be helpful to you in terms of helpful advice. Having read it fully, I am going to dispense it with my doctor and go down the road of alternative medicine and try some good old-fashioned Chinese acupuncture treatment to sort myself out. Good luck to you with a viable solution mate. https://www.versusarthritis.org/about-arthritis/conditions/fibromyalgia Pedro ![]()

Plankowner Posts: 5024 Location: Gulfport, MS | Subject: RE: Fibromyalgia Gil, mine is triggered by eating tomatoes. Think back to what you ate the day before that you may not have eaten in a while. After a couple of bouts that same item may rear its ugly head. I love tomatoes, but my quality of life is much better when I don't eat them. Another thing I have found helpful is rubbing "Penetrex" on the "hot spot." It makes the pain and itching go away in a hurry. You can find it in Walmart in the same area as "Icey-Hot", etc. Fair warning, it is pricey, but for me it is well worth the money (and it doesn't smell). That stuff works for me on joint pain also. If it didn't cost so much, I would take a bath in it.

Master and Commander Posts: 1662 | Subject: RE: Fibromyalgia Thanks. Mine if I have it was three years ago, an ache in my upper shoulders. This is in my right lower leg, and I cannot put any weight upon it. There is no confirming test, they try to eliminate other possibilities. Mine has been with me for two weeks, and is not dissipating in the slightest. I've tried exercise (suggested), pain killers, heat, and ice with no relief. Comes on worse at night. What's the longest your pain lasted?

Master and Commander Posts: 1662 | Subject: RE: Fibromyalgia Your link was pretty good. It seems like the disease and treatment vary depending on the individual. Right now it seems the younger doctors know little about this. I just hope to be able to walk again without excruciating pain. Right now I can barely stand. I wish it was a break - then I'd know eight weeks and it heals. I broke my wrist last July - that's maybe the stress that brought this attack on me, even though it healed.

Master and Commander Posts: 1662 | Subject: RE: Fibromyalgia Good News Bad News Finally heard from my Kaiser doctor via phone because of my three emails, he chewed me out for my Fibromyalgia diagnosis and canceling my PT appointment. Said you don't get it all of a sudden in a leg and that PT could provide the answer. No remedy or solution offered by him, but wants me to reschedule a PT visit. Said a leg is not complicated like a heart, or a brain and give PT the opportunity to come up with a remedy. I guess I'll retire from medicine and concentrate on improving.

As I type this, I'm trying without success to ignore the top of my right foot and my big toe. If you're having trouble walking, you might consider a Rollator (provided by VA). I used one of them for almost a year because my left knee is bone-on-bone. The rollator allowed me to keep the weight off of the leg by using my arms pushing down on the handles to take the weight off my leg. When I found a knee doctor that would give me gel shots in my knee every 3 months, I put the rollator in the corner until the next thing breaks down. Edited by Pig 2023-03-11 2:15 PM
