Wonder what's changed in my job, a world of charts and course plotting? I doubt few of those doing our jobs now would comprehend how we worked as well with such primitive tools.

How about learning how to use a slide rule, which dated from the 17th Century
I learned about it in a 12th grade math course; then again in A school; finally in college, for a 3rd time.
Then a scientific TI calculator did away with the slide rule and having to know certain math operations.
Just plug in the numbers and the answer was displayed.

What amazed me was when I went on my first cruise after leaving the Navy. I had to be about 25 years ago. We went on Norwiegan Cruise Lines. The Captain set aside a day and time for any one who wanted a tour of the bridge. So I went up and was amazed. Wgen I got there it was just the Captain and me. No lookouts, quartermaster, helmsman, nothing. The Captain was controling this big ship sitting at a table with all these nobs. Technology. |

I know I carried and used a slide rule in school when I thought I was going to become an engineer, but bad memories of me floundering in those classes has erased it from my memory banks. I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to use it after 60 years - come to think of it I might not even be able to use my old TI calculator. |

You said, "come to think of it I might not even be able to use my old TI calculator."
Ditto for me on both devices. |

In nuke school, we had to work out all problems on a slide rule - that was in 1974. I still have that slide rule... have NO F'KNG IDEA how it works anymore
