I first met Bob when our Pipe Band participated in the Tartan Day Parade in NYC in 2002. He met our tour bus on the street corner near his apartment and gave us a guided tour around Manhattan while providing running commentary. The Band was in awe of his knowledge. We were even able to get to Ground Zero. He knew everybody.
We remained friends and met up several more times, both in New York and in Groton for Sub Vet Events. While I was participating in a "Creative Writing Class" at the VA as part of my PTSD treatment he agreed to be my editor for the stories I was writing about my experience in the war. His expertise and "gentle" advice allowed me to win First Prize in a VA sponsored writing contest. The infamous "Snake" story is now immortalized in a published book of Veteran written short stories.
There are too many stories about him to relate here but, he was a true gentleman, a true submariner, and expert at pinging; especially when I filled the Harley with diesel and the Legend of the Diesel Doc was born. He even wrote a song about it.
R.I.P. my Friend and Shipmate.
I'll be eternally grateful to you for your mentorship.
Doc

Well said Doc!  Bob was extremely approachable and had NO ego for a guy who knows so many power players in the US.  Very sad to hear this news as Bob was one of a kind for sure!  RIP Bob!!
