| At random: The first submarine which actually sank another enemy vessel under combat conditions was the CSS HUNLEY built during the Civil War. The Union frigate HOUSATONIC on blockade station off Charleston, S. C. was the victim. The incident occurred on February 17, 1864. |

The USA...AND it's Allies, have been doing it for soooooo long that it's not funny. It is, as Dex was pointing out to us furriners, all about self. Greed and how can this benefit 'us'. That is the nuts and bolts of it. That is the only reason why the USA is in Iraq ( or did you just pull out today ) and Afghanistan.....oh, and South Korea, Europe, Japan and anywhere else I am unaware of. Dex usually forgets such things when he is having a go at us furriners when we make these comments. Also forgetting about the Right to Free Speech...and that some of us who did 20 years in our nation's Service, don't necessarily have the Right to make comments about the USA or USN....but because we have traveled extensively, and operated, and Served with the USN and her members, are perhaps 'entitled' to make observations/comments. He, and anyone here can make comments about Australia and the R.A.N. whenever they like.....and some have. I still call them friends too. *_* ( This isn't an attack on Dex, just an observation. ) Blue *_* PS. I think the USA should concentrate on dealing with the problem to the South of you.....build a bloody dirty great big wall ( The Chinese did it about 2,000 years ago ) and stop the Illegals and the Drugs entering your great nation...that is what is killing you. From what I hear,( from Americans ) it maybe too late.

| Old Salt Posts: 402 | Subject: RE: Dex - Blue, It's not that easy. We aren't allowed to build a big wall or the government South of us get angry. We have large man made canal in one section. The water in the canal flows at a very fast rate. Anyone attempting to swim across it does not stand a chance. There are fences and signs to warn of the danger and keep people out but.... people keep drowning in the thing. Our media keep harping about how we are causing harm to these poor people looking for a better life. It is sad that people lose their lives but short of putting a cover over the thing what else can we do? Oh, I don't see the other government offering any help in the matter. They just make demands. Now I may sound like Dex here but this is the truth. Before our war between the states, we had a little war with that country. We defeated them soundly. Their top general had to flee his home so fast he didn't have time to take his wooden leg with him, (it's in one of our museums today),. The government had abandoned the country and we had trouble finding someone of authority to sign the surrender. After all that we gave them their country back and paid for California and the New Mexico territories. But after 150 years people forget. Take Care, Steve | ||

The Brits, over many years, became quite good at it and in most cases, where that oar was stuck in, had considerable improvement in local conditions. WWI was the end of Pax Britannica and the rise of the US. US stuck its oar in after WWII but it hadn't had the long learning curve that the Brits had had. I like the quote from one of Tom Clancy's novels where one of our heroes comments that International Relations is "one country f...ing another country." Just a few words can mean so much. Had the Brits not stuck their oar in to Terra Australis, I wonder what language our country would be speaking now.

COMSUBBBS Posts: 3202 Location: Alexandria, Virginia | Subject: Corabelle, Sorry I was out of town Cora, I apologize, I was out of town and "out of pocket". Oddly enough at one time both Sadam and Osama were our allies and "soapy shower" pals. We were allied with Sadam and supplied him with arms and trained his goons during the bloody Iran/Iraq war. If we hadn't done out under the table magic out of sight intervention, Iran would have eaten Sadam's lunch.(see CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR...and read the book ) Some think we created the monster he became...I'll leave that up to others. Outside political subjugation and manipulation is unfortunately a fact throughout the history of the Mid-East...Some say that the last dominant outside power in the region was Alexander the Great, following his father Phillip of Macedon. The Mongolian nomads, an attempt at dominance from the Urals and Balkans, A badly failed attempt by Great Britain, Russian intervention and now our confused objective toedance and arrogance to think we can rebuild those nations in accordance with Western tolerance and democratic ideals and principals, is to ignore history, the reality of global drug trade trafficking, deepseeded fudamentalist Islamic hatred based on Shira Law, distrust of anything formulated outside of the narrow mindedness of the regional population...will forever thwart change in that part of the world. Historical fact. Why are we there? Damned if I know. There were no weapons of mass destruction. The fear of the use of such weapons kept Iran at bay following George Bush, the father's humiliating fanny kicking administered to Sadam in the first Gulf War. At the end of that war, Sadam was sitting there with considerably reduced reputation, a torn all to hell military organization....a dessert loaded with burned out tanks and destroyed Russian military equipment and a Republican Guard exposed as a Larry, Moe and Shemp force. Some would advance the argument that a reduced in prestigue Sadam with his verbose threats to deploy his self created threat of weapons of unbelivable consequences, in a way stabilized the region...a la Tito in post war Yugoslavia. Even after the publicly administered fanny kicking Sadam got from the dominant US forces in the early 90's...He remained in the eyes of neighbors the paper tiger bully that kept them at bay...Nobody wanted to face those terrible weapons he had in his closet, his papermasche Godzilla boogey monster. We with our deluded and outfoxed intelligence community bought his complete wheelbarrow load of self fabricated horse manure and acted on it as fact....and in so doing ended up with egg on our face and turned loose a multi-headed snake of warring religious factions.... Here's my screwball take. For years we have argued about withdrawal time tables sending a clear message that at some yet to be determined future date the US who now has a fully worldwide reputation for not going the distance in any fight since our two global victories in WWI and WWII....will be taking down the circus tent and closing the massive contractor gravy train where we funnel borrowed Chinese funds into the pockets of corporate interests of the short term created money honey pots set up to profit mightily off these wars. For years in preperation for our foregone conclusion pullout. Iran has poured arms and war materials into Iraq...jammed every crack and crevice of every s**te mosque with everything needed to wipe the Sunnis off the face of the earth...guns explosives, rocket propelled grenade launchers...sophisticated mines, remote detonators and tons of propaganda materials to include their perennial favorite the Abu Grabe torture posters found to be their greatest recruiting tool. So here's my screwball theory...Once we are relocated and occupied with other global fish to fry...Omar and Ali are going to go to the mosque deliver a few, for the love of Allah haranging speeches, start handing out Iranian provided arms and convince those ignorant bastards that the most direct road to the eternal gardens of Allah is over the bodies of dead Sunnis. And...the entire country erupts in a Dodge City style Mexican shootout resulting in Iranian backed s**te dominance of what is left of Sadam's Iraq....and the Kurds will be hopping on their skateboards and forcing their way across the Turkish border to get out of the reach of the s**tes....Who said "revenge is a dish better served cold" One of the signs of tough times ahead is the fact that women in Eastern Iraq are purchasing and donning the blue head to toe, tank slit viewing hole, burkas imported from Afghanistan in anticipation of the reestablishment of Shira Law. And as one Intel Analyst put it at Fort Benning (quote) "The bastards are sweeping down the public stoning plazas in anticipation of ridding society of those female tramps who adopted Western style clothing during what they call the American invasion and forced occupation. If everything works according to their plans and designs there's going to be one helluva lot of bloody rock popping going on in the public plazas across Iraq until all these sinful gals are purged from the ranks of the properly subservient females residing in Iraq. Praise Allah. Again these are my stupid views and an attempt to forecast the future based on the tea leaves I'm reading. Corabelle, When Bush opened this fish fry we were the only one dancing to the tunes being played who actually had nuclear ordinance and could have uncorked some of it (especially when Ossama and his bloody handed henchmen were known to be holed up in Tora Bora...If we had treated them to a little dose of Radiation Polka music...and blown their goat milk breath reekuing and stinking fannies to hell in a firey flash, it would have probably been over.) One thing we've gotten good at during the course of this war is a long list of multiple missed opportunities based on sensitivity...fear of "collateral damage" and reluctance to offend our new owners, China. Soon every player in the game will be hauling around his own private nuke bomb stash. Victory rarely visits the tents of the weak and timid. I guess the best answer to your "Why are we there?" question would be this....that's the international rat hole where the 9-11 attacks were fomented, cooked up...incubated and made the bloody success they became. That's the supposed sanctuary of the scuzwads who hit us...If we had become the nucular Orkin Man and blown hell out of the entire area We may have very well have ended the whole thing for lack of willing participants. Just my take. Thanks for asking. DEX

Somewhere along the line somebody had to do it..Big fires and nobody with the dogs willing to fight them..So as us Americans have come to learn over and over again since 1917 putting out other peoples fires is what we do eh???... it's what's expected of Uncle Sam and his legions of willing cannon fodder. And when you're the biggest dog on the porch it's a matter of either rolling over and submitting to the little pooches or biting first.. Problem here is certain untrained masters of the dogs want to and do keep the big dog on a short leash..not allowing him to finish what the master started...( Hey! Vietnam Brothers does this sound familiar??) ( hey ANZACS does this sound famiar) You bet ya! All the while the little pooches are going in the back door eating all the viddles and pooping on the floor. Hence the big dog gets blamed for the mess in the kitchen.. It's really quite simple. COMSUBBBS Posts: 3202 Location: Alexandria, Virginia | Subject: RE: Dex - Let's face it, we have the means to clean the entire region up. I will admit that I don't understand the big dog/little dog, doggie pooping and lousing up the porch with doggie doo-doo concept. But an organ grinders monkey could recognize the following. The nukes here can explain the concept of nuclear deterrence. But nuclear ordinance is knowing that you are the Big Dog and can unleash an explosive attitude adjuster that will allow you to put your enemy in a state where feeding himself and finding a place to get the hell out of the rain will become a damnsite more important than pushing some screwball political agenda. Nothing will take the fight out of a bunch of fanatics faster than destroying everything they held dear. The Germans got sick and tired of burying their friends and relatives only to look skyward and see another incoming flight of one hundred fifty B-17's coming in to reduce their neighborhoods to piles of rubble and loose bricks. Nuclear detterence is no longer credible if the entire world knows you no longer have the guts to deliver the goods. No situation ever presented a nation a better reason, a better incentive and a more legitiment reason to drop a couple of loads of atomic goodies on a viper loaded community than 9-11...The World would have backed us when their TVs were showing the still smoking ruins of the Twin Towers and the Pentagon. The decent people of planet earth would have risen in unison to applaud such a response. But the pipsqueek leadership at the top had cajones the size of Baskin-Robbins sprinkles and let the opportunity slip through their inept fingers. We as a nation have been infected with the "tiny heart syndrome" After Pearl Harbor, if Franklin Roosevelt had had a closet full of nukes Hirohito, Tojo and Yammamoto would have been standing around in blacked, shredded glow-in-the-dark skivvies asking each other "Where in the hell did the entire country disappear to?" Next, we are caught up in a new cycle of what I call "dis-insentive to seek victory" Get this if you are a major combat support contractor perpetuation of the war that has become your gravy train is a good thing...stretching it out means more profit...more breast feeding off Lady Liberty....and time to worm yourself under the skin of the defense establishment, to foster dependence on the services and personnel augmentation you are shilling to folks who are involved in political "three card Monty" drawdowns. Case in point...as trucks loaded with American uniformed personnel head toward embarkation points in Kuwait they pass vehicles loaded with $250,000 a year contract mercinaries heading in the direction they just came from to reoccupy their just vacated facilities. It's a form of "pull the wool over the eyes" of the now disinterested American public. Incontrovertable fact....Contractors don't want the war to end, for the same reason that McDonalds would lobby against the proposal of a National Protect the Cows Act....Their entire existence depends soley on having a bloody protracted conflict to milk profit out of. Where would KBR go if peace broke out all over the world?, unless prostitution was legalized and they could buy 8000 Winnebegos and sell horizontal refreshment at NFL and major league baseball games in the stadium parking lots at pre-game tailgate parties, halftime and post game lot locations giving guys something to do until the parking lots cleared and homeward bound traffic thinned out. Actually I didn't say that....Doc Beeghly is a ventrilloquist. You can bet your last silver doo-dah that Contractors are doing their best to keep the Energizer Bunny of Islamic Fundamentalist Unrest going..."Throw another log on the fire, Momma and pay the fidder to keep providing a tune...we're gonna dance till down." The Pentagon is loaded with high dollar contractor leaches feeding on the hog troughs of taxpayer dollars....The Defense Department Dogs are loaded with "in for the duration" blood sucking ticks. And Sweetie Pie those money grubbing sonuvabitches have no intention of going anywhere unless Uncle Sam gives birth to a bigger post war nation reconstruction dog for the blood sucking ticks to move to. It will be one helluva lot easier to wipe out Al Quada and the Taliban than to empty the posh digs here in the hog trough heaven of the Nation's Capitol...occupied by Contractors, Lobbyists for the Contracting Industry and the massive camp follower leeches following the "Shovel Bucks Parade". "America we're here to lighten you wallets and mine your pockets for silver....We have replaced your sons and daughters on the battlefield and continue the hoedown...doing the Mid-East go-on-forever dosey-do on your behalf." Remember, we quit minting VICTORY medals in 1946....And no lad in uniform today can actually define exactly what victory would look like after all the political rhetoric was sifted and the bulls**t extracted. And that's the take of an admittedly flawed Qualified E-3 Smokeboat rider. DEX Edited by dex armstrong 2010-09-03 6:42 AM

I will admit that I don't understand the big dog/little dog, doggie pooping and lousing up the porch with doggie doo-doo concept. But an organ grinders monkey could recognize the following. Well Dex from one "Organ Grinder" to another ( and I don't mean Hammonds).. It's like this.. For several reasons that very few can understand or grasp for the past Century or so American has become the " Pooper Scooper" of the World. Many times rushing in to clean up the Poop the rest of the world has discovered on their kitchen floors. Thus costing us much pain, loss and regret for failing to house train the pooping dogs of the world and often resulting in much guilt for the hard love we have demonstrated with our fellow dog trainers. In time we became excellent dog trainers and expected the rest of the dogs in the world to like our methods and become like us.. But with the few exceptions we all know about today... most of the dog owners whose floors we cleaned up and whose dogs we retrained are now complaining about the hi gloss finish we left on their kitchen floors and they want us to maintain it for them while they stop tending to their own dogs who are starting to poop in their kitchins all over again. Most have become blinded by the luster of their cleaned floors.. ( I.E. Japan, China, France and much of East Europe) and as a result of this Gloss blindness they can't see or acknowledge the bad dogs on their back porch looking for a place to poop. What we see today is our dog trainers prefer to keep their dogs on very short leashs.. Letting them off the porch when the conditions are too bad to keep them on the porch but always keeping a firm hand on the leash.. Our as you remind us they use someone else's dogs for the job....Hence... None of the bad dogs or their masters fear the American Dogs anymore and with this lack of fear comes the lack of respect we see today for our Dog Trainers, Dog masters and worse yet our Dogs. As well as the ever growing and very dangerous reluctance for our dogs to get off the porch in the first place.. Like I said.. It's really quite simple. Edited by Smiley 2010-09-03 3:06 PM

We now are having problems with what is happening to our neighbor to the south - with their problems with drug lords who are buying the police, and the army so that you don't know the good guy from the bad. Mexico will not be able to solve this problem alone and will require our help, but on their terms. So whatever we do we will be damned for it. Abate the drug problem by sealing the border and we are castigated by those who want free and unlimited immigration. Don't seal the border and we become promoters of the drug lords. Back then we could clearly recognize low life sonuvabitches who needed to get an early assist in planetary exit and accommodated a lot of them...WWII went on four years and was fought by serious men, who wanted to kill our enemies in lage package deals, achieve total and absolute victory....stamp out any residual bad behavior...and get the hell home to crawl into bed beside Momma again and get back to wrinkling up her nightie again and return to their interrupted lives. In this Mid-Eastern seemingly endless Islamic successful effort to lead us around by the nose and kill us in nickle and dime packages....Where policies and objectives change every twenty minutes and force commanders spend a helluva lot of time...shaking each others hands, giving continuous news conferences where dickdancing is characterized as indicating some kind of combat progress and the obscenely over decorated poobahs hand each other medals and stage photo ops.....Where the Coalition Forces hold no ground...and move around the countryside like shooting gallery ducks...Us quacking and them hacking. We have been doing the bloodbath Hokey-Pokey for damn near ten years and to my knowledge we haven't slammed the first worthless sonuvabitch up against a wall and ventillated his turban topped carcass with full metal jacket small arms ordinance. Folks to the out-of-control camel jockeys we don't look serious...They behead Coalition troops seemingly for personal amusement and we round up those bastards, provide them Korans to read, provide them gratus medical attention and feed the worthless bastards. What we should be doing is round them up, shoot em, cremate em and scatter their ashes over the processing ponds at the Kabul Sewage Plant....We are way overdue to starting shooting some of these nasty bastards....or trucking them over to the local Alpo plant. War's a rough business....The last time I checked, wars are won by killing bad guys in as large a package deal as you can arrange. Once you kill a sonuvabitch you can take that chess piece off the board and not have to deal with it ever again in the future...The silly idea that you can rehabilitate terrorist animals, kiss them on the lips, whisper "Go thou and sin no more." and turn the sonuvabitches loose is a Mary Poppins bulls**t myth. If you haul them out and shoot them (A) You don't ever have to buy them another box of Post Toasties or watch the sonuvabitches steal planetary oxygen (B) You never have to hear them yelling inspirational slogans and doing raghead cheerleading in captivity and best of all (C) You never have to find their ugly, stupid faces in any future suspected terrorist round-ups. Shoot em...."DEX, You want to turn them into martyrs?" "Damn Skippy....You make enough martyrs and the bastards may start running out of available martyr material."
