At random: Coronation ceremonies of Emperor Alexander II of Russia in 1855 were enlivened by a submarine concert. Wilhelm Bauer, a Bavarian inventor, took three musicians under the waters of Kronstadt Harbor in a submarine he had built, where they played appropriate music during the coronation. The music was distinctly heard on the surface.

Local Children’s Home to Host the Moving Wall

Eaton Rapids, Mich. – The VFW National Home for Children will host the Moving Wall, a transportable version of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. at 3573 S. Waverly Road in Eaton Rapids from August 9-13.

There is no admission fee to visit the Moving wall which will be open to the public 24 hours daily from 2 p.m. August 9 until 8 a.m. August 13. Highlighted events include the opening ceremony on August 9 at 4 p.m. with keynote speaker James Goldsmith, Past VFW Commander-in-Chief; special ceremonies for the families of those killed in action in the Vietnam War at 5 p.m. on August 10; special ceremonies presented by Veterans Groups from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on August 11; and closing ceremonies on August 12 at 7 p.m. with guest speaker Jack Devine, National Vice President of Vietnam Veterans of America.

During the Moving Wall’s stay at the 629-acre child care facility, there will be a 24-hour color guard on duty with 24-hour volunteer escorts. In addition, the National Home will feature a comfort tent with refreshments, a medical tent, rest room facilities and a no-cost lunch and dinner in the Community Center.

The Moving Wall is the half-size replica of the Washington, D.C. Vietnam Veterans Memorial and has been touring the country for more than 20 years. In 1982, John Devitt, a former helicopter door gunner and Army veteran, visited Washington, D.C. for the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and to participate in the National Salute to Vietnam Veterans. Devitt’s visit and experience led to the creation of the Moving Wall which has since moved millions of people.

The Wall has carved into it the names of the 58,253 American military personnel who were direct casualties of the war, including those who are still considered Missing In Action (MIA). When the Wall was dedicated on November 11, 1982, there were 57,159 names engraved on the black granite panels.

For more information or if you are interested in volunteering, please contact the National Home at (800) 424-8360.
