At random: "I propose to you a new arm of war, as formidable as it is economical. Submarine navigation, which has been sometimes attempted, but as all know without results, owing to want of suitable opportunities, is now a problematical thing no more." - Brutus de Villeroi in a letter to President Lincoln, 1862

One thing I really miss here in the South and that is the parades we had for all occasions around Buffalo, NY. It seemed like every rual fire department had a drum and bugle corp. The VFW and American Legion had theirs also.
You take Memorial Day, Flag Day, Labor Day and a few other days there was always a parade. The local High Schools got into the act too. Drill teams, Shriners with their various side clubs, man it was a blast.
Here in Charleston IF there is a parade, the music comes out of a boom box in a convertible with some old politican wavy at the crowd along with some local TV personalities. IF there is a band it's some jive group jumping up a down and trying to play music and as stated above by Vic, most of the people are just standing there wondering "WTF".

Nice post. Having been on the USS Francis Scott Key I had heard it before. But that was a long time ago. It was good to have a refresher course.
