GREENLY, John R., 83, died June 14, 2007 He was born on December 20, 1923 in Minnesota to John and Bell Greenly as well as his sister, Eleanor. John joined the Navy at age 17 and went off to War in the South Pacific in 1942 in the Submarine Service. He spent 2 harrowing years in service to his country which he considered an honor and privilege. I often asked what he liked and disliked most about his service in which he replied 'the food was pretty good on the boats and we could have all we wanted at any time but I didn't much care for getting shot at". After WWII, John earned a Bachelor's of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Minnesota. His character, ethics and work habits allowed him to become successful at the various careers he pursued which all ended up in Sales. John was preceded in death by his daughter, Ann, and his wife of 53 years Marvel. He leaves behind his son, Dick and his wife Terri and John's two granddaughters, Timberly and Christy, along with his sister, Eleanor and her family. However, eventually John would tell you that his true life began at age 79 when he met His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His new life began with his dearest friends at Messiah Lutheran Church in Oklahoma City. He would say he got the 'meaning of life" by his service as a Stephen Minister or Hospice volunteer and all the rest of the things he pursued prior to his new found Faith in Christ was just window dressing. John loved to serve other people at his previous home at Southern Plaza and his new home at Concordia, but most of all, John loved God. Dad you will be missed however: The Bible says in I Thessalonians 4:13-14 'And regarding the question, friends, that has come up about what happens to those already dead and buried, we don't want you in the dark any longer. First off, you must not carry on over them like people who have nothing to look forward to, as if the grave were the last word. Since Jesus died and broke loose from the grave, God will most certainly bring back to life those who died in Jesus."A memorial service will be held at Messiah Lutheran Church, 3600 NW Expressway in OKC on Saturday, June 16, 2007 at 2:00 p.m. Memorial gifts may be made to Messiah Lutheran Church in Oklahoma City.
