At random: Probably the most expensive ballast ever carried by a ship was two tons of gold and eighteen tons of silver coins carried by the U.S. submarine TROUT while on a trip from Corregidor to Pearl Harbor early in World War II. TROUT had removed her moveable ballast to allow for a larger cargo of ammunition to be transported for the defenders on the embattled island. Lcdr. Fenno, TROUT's CO, planned on replacing the ballast with sand bags, but found none were available. The gold and silver from the Bank of the Philippines was substituted as ballast, which also solved the problem of removing the treasure to a safe place prior to invasion by the enemy.

Be careful! When you goto the article attached to Don's post there's an ad in the upper right offering a "submarine ring tone" for your cellphone. If you confirm getting their pin on your phone you have just subscribed to a $10/month ringtone service.

I only served on the Left Coast and had no idea how beautiful New London is from this view. I had the opportunity later to visit the Nautilus at New London and took the train from New York to Boston. What amazed me most was how beautiful the scenery was around New London.

Gil,

It is interesting to hear you rode the train.

I was on a Polaris Boat that spent off patrol periods in Groton.

The multi story red brick building with a gray roof right smack in the middle of the photo is (was?) the train station. I spent many a cold Friday night waiting for the train to New York. Then, on the return trip the train left NY at 3:15AM Monday to get you to New London in time to grab a cab to make muster.
