Over the years we have all heard "Kepp your dive to surface ratio equal to one." "There are more planes on the bottom of the oceans than there are submarines in the sky." "What goes up does have to come down. However, what goes down doesn't necessarliy have to come back up." How many others are out there?

Water certainly does have a sound of its own, especially at depths we traveled at. It will get your attention rather quick.

"Rub-a-dub-dub, clean-up the sub" was a popular under the breathe mumble during field days.  Along with "Run she may, Shine she must!"

Submariners do it deeper. (Not real sure what "it" is.)

In response to the question "how does it work?"

"It works fine, fails safe, it won't rust, won't bust, it drains to the bilges and it's sailor proof"

Trim & Drain refers to the power supply busses and the reference to Electrical Schools is the ooly used for remembering the resistor color-code: Black, Brown, Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet, Gray, White (0 thru 9, respectively).

I'll take a black and bitter with my sticky buns, please.

For the steaming fast attacks that spent more time at sea than in port (or at least it seemed that way):

It's long, black and never comes back.

"Makin' goin' home turns..." and "Channel Fever!"

When asked about your taste in women: "Sick, lame, lazy... blind, crippled or crazy. If they can't walk, I'll drag 'em"

Of course, "Nuke" was the second half of a compound word. Can't remember the first half... think it started with an "F"...

When you had a good night on the beach: "Blued, screwed and tattoo'd"

A favorite of my M-Div Chief Ross Hieatt when I'd show up for quarters BADLY hung over: "Gentry, your eyes look like two piss-holes in the snow!"

"Snake Ranch"

"Haze gray and underway"

"Blow everything but the messcooks"

Coffee orders: "Sonny Liston" (black & bitter); "Marilyn Monroe" (blonde & sweet); "Sammy Davis" (black & sweet), can't remember if we even had one for blonde & bitter, don't think anyone drank their coffee that way

Water up over the lower flats deckplates: "Normal seepage"

As closely as you are associated with San Freakcisco, I'm not sure I'd have contributed that little ditty!

I remember that one differently, Doc; maybe it one of those sayings that differed between Atlantic and Pacific fleets. The version I recall is:
'Works fine, fails safe, varies from ship to ship, and don't f**k with it!'

Besides which nothing on this earth is 100% sailor-proof!

If you were taught by a WW II vet (as I was) it went "Bad boys rape our young girls behind Victory Garden walls. Get some now!"

The last bit stood for Gold, Silver, No color which was the last band on the resistor and indicated tolerance value +/- (5%, 10%, 20%, IIRC).

Heard from the off going crew on boomers as they leave the boat:

"Oh, by the way"...the missile heating and cooling pumps need new seals (or anything else that was a horror show to fix)

Today the youngins on the web think they invented BTW

I've also heard "Screw" instead of "Crew".

When I came to the boat, there were several guys who didn't want operating electronic equipment to be tweeked or adjusted especially the radar. They were always saying, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!"
