COBEAN, Jr., Warren Richardson, CAPT, USN, Ret., 84, passed away 06/00/2007 at home after a long illness, surrounded by his family. He will be best remembered as one of the original members of Admiral Hyman Rickover's "Nuclear Navy" and as the first reactor officer and later executive officer of the USS Nautilus, the world's first nuclear submarine. Captain Cobean is survived by his wife of 61 years, Jean Beaumont Cobean; sister Ruth C. McPherson of Roswell, New Mexico; son Warren R. Cobean III of Greenville, New York; son Charles S. Cobean of Nashville, Tennessee; daughter Lisa C. Muse of Croton, New York; nine grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. During his 26-year naval career, he served on the battleship New Jersey and the submarines Besugo and Nautilus. He then commanded the submarines Tiru, Halibut, James Monroe, and George C. Marshall before becoming Deputy Director of the Strategic Systems Project Office, which developed the Poseidon and Trident missile project. He was awarded the Legion of Merit for his service during this time. Capt. Cobean retired from the Navy in 1972 and began a second career, first at Con Edison in New York, and later at Burns and Roe in New Jersey, where he eventually became President. After retiring from Burns and Roe, he became a consultant to the boards of TVA, Duke Power, Toledo Edison, & other utilities. A memorial service will be held at the First Church of Round Hill in Greenwich, on Saturday at 3PM.


FRAZEE, Jr., Murray B., CAPT, USN, Ret., 91, died Wednesday, June 27, 2007. He was married December 27, 1941, at the home of his bride, Betty Swope, in Gettysburg. Born January 8, 1916, in Lafayette, Ind., he was the son of the late Lieutenant Colonel Murray B. Frazee, Sr., AUS (Ret) and Mrs. Caroline (Matthews) Frazee. In addition to his wife Betty, Murray is survived by his children, James and wife, Tricia of Gettysburg, Murray, III and wife, Amanda of Eugene, Ore., Nancy Poor and husband, Dr. David D.S. Poor of Meadowbrook, Pa., and Sally Frazee and husband, Dr. Raymond Wells of Abington; 11 grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; and sister, Col. Mary E. Frazee, USA (Ret) of San Antonia, Texas. Murray was a 1933 graduate of Gettysburg High School. He attended Gettysburg College from 1933-1935, then served in the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., from 1935-1939. He then received his B.S. Degree from George Washington University Law School, attending from 1945-1948. Murray continued to further his degree earning J.D. Degree with honors. He received his M.A. from the American University, 1963-1964. And from 1958-59 he received a diploma from the National War College. Commissioned Ensign, U.S.N. 1939, he was promoted through the ranks and served as Captain, U.S.N. 1958 to 1966, when he voluntarily retired. At retirement from U.S.N., he took and passed the Pennsylvania bar exam and practiced in Adams County from 1966 to 1981, in partnership with his brother-in-law, the late Donald M. Swope, Esquire. Murray spent 27 years of active duty in the Navy, 1939-1966. A year in an aircraft carrier and a year as Chief Engineer in a destroyer, were followed by submarine school and service throughout WWII in submarines. He made 11 submarine war patrols, each averaging 60 days, the first seven in Grayback and the last four in Tang, as second in command. He received three awards of Silver Star Medal and two Bronze Star Medals. He commanded Submarine GAR, 1944-1945. Later, during peace time, he commanded submarine Greenfish, a division of five submarines and a squadron of 14 submarines and had for three year tours of duty in the Pentagon. Murray and his wife are members of Gettysburg Presbyterian Church since 1931. He was a member of Hanover Elks, VFW, and U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association. Graveside services will be private. A memorial service is yet been determined. In lieu of flowers, contributions made to Desmoid Tumor Research, DTRF, P.O. Box 273, Suffern, NY 10901, would mean a lot to the family. Arrangements are by Auer Memorial Home and Cremation Services, Inc., Harrisburg.


MARION, Leon O., 82, of St. Petersburg, FL died Tuesday June 26, 2007 at Westminster Suncoast of prostate cancer. He was born in Huntington Park, CA December 29, 1924 and came here in 2001 from Airmont, N.Y. He was a graduate of Occidental College in Redlands, Calif., and attended graduate school at Columbia University. A Navy veteran, he served in the Submarine Service during World War II. Leon was a Secretary of the WWII Submarine Veterans Sun Coast Chapter and also a member of US Submarine Veterans, Inc Tang Base. He was on the first American relief plane to land in Berlin after the USSR initiated the Berlin Blockade in 1948. He retired as chief executive officer of the Tolstoy Foundation and was CEO of the American Council of Voluntary Agencies for Foreign Service. He was a longtime adviser to the State Department and the White House during the Carter administration. At the First United Methodist Church, he was a member, lay leader, Sunday school teacher and a delegate to the Florida United Methodist annual conference in Lakeland. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Ann B.; two daughters, Marianne L. Berkovits, Rocky Point, N.Y.; and Linda G. Marion, New Paltz, N.Y.; and a son, Richard B., and a grandson, Richard James Marion, both of Atlanta. Anderson-McQueen Funeral & Cremation Centers-N.E. St. Petersburg. MURPHY, Jr., Sterling E. "Butch”, 61, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, June 27, 2007, in Walton. Butch was born in Margaretville on Nov. 19, 1945, the son of the late Sterling and Ella (Shaver) Murphy-Butler. He graduated from Downsville High School in 1965. Butch proudly served his country in the United States Navy, where he served as a radioman on a submarine. He received an honorable discharge and a Defense Service Medal upon discharge in 1971. He married Sherrie VanLoan on April 4, 1970. He worked construction for several years before working at S.J. Bailey's & Son for nearly 20 years. He went on to work at Norbord in Deposit and more recently drove a school bus for Walton Central School. He loved the kids and enjoyed driving them on their trips and sporting events. He loved the outdoors where when he was younger, he enjoyed playing in the men's softball league, taking his sons hunting and fishing and bowling. He loved to watch his grandchildren's sporting events and was a big Walton Warrior fan. Butch and Sherrie also enjoyed their yearly trips to Myrtle Beach with many of their friends. He was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Downsville where he served as an altar boy and Accolade for many years. Butch is survived by his wife and best friend of 37 years, Sherrie (VanLoan) Murphy; three sons, Shawn (Helen) Murphy, Jamie Murphy, and Craig (Leanne) Murphy; and one daughter, Tori (Rich) Roloson, all of Walton; and eight grandchildren, whom he loved very much, Ashleigh, Cameron, Samantha, Brent, Dustin, Dawson, Hailee and Oliva. He is also survived by his three brothers, Roy (Mary Lou) Murphy, Jim (Linda) Murphy and Walt Murphy; two sisters, Sylvia (Steve) Reed and Sis (Paul) Doig; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Butch is also survived by his many very close "Myrtle Beach" friends and special neighbors.
Butch, with Sherrie by his side, opened Murph's Funnels & Cones. Together they sold deep-fried treats at most of the local events and fairs. The business was a dream come true for both of them. He was predeceased by his father, Sterling Murphy Sr., on April 8, 1981; his mother, Ella (Shaver) Murphy-Butler, on Oct. 8, 2004; and a stepsister, Lois. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him. Friends and relatives are invited to call from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday afternoon, June 29, 2007, at the Clark, Winter & Courtney Funeral Home, 25 Townsend St., Walton, where funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Stephen Blews officiating. Interment will be in Walton Cemetery with full military honors.

WEBBER, Jr., William J., 83, of Westborough, died on Wednesday, June 27, 2007 at the UMass Memorial Healthcare-University Campus, Worcester. He was the husband of 58 years to Helen L. (King) Webber. Born in Worcester, he was the son of the late William J. and Margaret (Moore) Webber. He was educated in Worcester schools and was a graduate of the Massachusetts School of Pharmacy in Boston. During WWII he served with the U.S. Navy serving in submarine service in the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre. He was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Medal, Good Conduct Medal and a Presidential Unit Citation. Mr. Webber was employed as the Director of Quality Assurance for Astra Pharmaceutical retiring in 1999. He was a communicant of St. Luke the Evangelist Church and had been a resident of Westborough since 1951. In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, Katherine L. Curtis and her husband, T. Anthony, of Holyoke, Mark R. Webber and his fiancé, Adrienne, of Northborough and Beth E. Lewis and her husband, Charles, of Stow; one brother, Paul Webber and his wife, Barbara, of Seattle, WA; one sister, Frances Webber of Worcester and eight grandchildren, Beth Ayn Curtis, Joshua Curtis, Adam Curtis, Margaret Webber, Emily Webber, Haley Webber, Bradley Lewis and Casey Lewis. He was the brother of the late Richard Webber. The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at UMass South Pod ER and ICU as well as the wonderful staff at the VNA Care Network for their compassionate care. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, July 2, at 10:30 A.M. in St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 70 West Main St., Westborough. Burial, with Military Honors, will follow in St. Luke's Cemetery.
