Today's "Picture of the Day" came as a direct result of my asking for some input via a recent post. John Love ("Engineman Supreme" and HAM operator par excellence - QSL, QSL) sent this very unique shot of his old home - the USS Becuna with this comment: "John: This is the USS Becuna crew SS319 saluting President Truman at the keel laying of the Nautilus SS572 at E B June 1952. The beginning of the end of the diesels. I was an EN 2 on the Becuna from Jan 1950 till Feb 1953." This picture is one of the most unique boat & crew shots that it has been my privilege to share with you out there in our extended submarine community - thank you John, see you on the cruise! - enjoy! |

John, I think Joe Reddy, ENCSS was COB of Becuna at that time, might have been a later date. I was detached from USS Cod SS-224 as she was going on a trip south. I went to Squadron 10 office under YN1SS Timmons for my last month. The day of President Truman arriving at EB to christen keel of USS Nautilas we had -4- submarines in the Thames. I was ordered aboard the USS Torsk SS-423 for this particular day, my last official duty for the US Navy. I was honorably discharged June 27, 1952. |
