HILL, Sr., James Houston, 81, passed from this earthly life to his heavenly home on Tuesday, June 26, 2007 after complications from a stroke. He was born on May 24, 1926 in Abilene, Texas to William Houston Hill, Jr. and Minnie Ila Newton Hill. James was predeceased by his brother, the late Charles E. Hill, and is survived by his beloved sister and best friend, Billie Ann Baker and her husband Kenneth of Midland. He grew up and attended schools in Colorado City and Midland, graduating from Midland High School in the class of 1943. After graduation he joined the Navy and finished out the closing years of WWII in the submarine service aboard the USS Besugo (SS-321). James was very proud of his service to his country and in later years enjoyed attending veterans reunions associated with the submarine service. Mr. Hill was a Mason and a member of the Midland Lodge #623. After the war, James spent several years attending Texas Tech University before returning to Midland to work with his father and brother in the family contracting business, Houston Hill, Inc. Together they built numerous churches, banks and schools in the Midland area. After James worked in Midland for many years in the contracting and restaurant business, he moved to Lake Buchanan near Burnet, Texas where he spent over 20 years building lake homes in that area. After resettling in Midland James rekindled a high school romance with Marjorie Barron Wiseman and the two became inseparable. After marrying in Banff, Alberta, Canada, they made their home in Midland. James and Marjorie enjoyed over 25 years together fishing, golfing, attending Dallas Cowboys games, and traveling the world. Above all they loved to spoil a number of their precious dogs, Samantha, Squeaker, and Sassy, just to name a few. James truly loved a game of cards or dominoes and never turned down an opportunity to "wet a hook". During many fishing trips to Council Creek on Lake Buchanan and campouts on the Llano River in Junction, James taught his children the importance of enjoying the beauty of nature and the art and skill of fishing and water skiing. James' family and many lifelong friends would say that he was a man of strong opinions and convictions. While he was willing to share those opinions at any time, he was also someone that family and friends could always count on to help out in tough times or sorrow. Mr. Hill lost his soul mate, Marjorie, in December, 2006. He leaves behind to tell the "tales" his sister, children, stepchildren, grandchildren, and their spouses. Surviving him are his daughters, Martha Ann Hill Price and husband Mark of Bertram, Texas, and Candice Kay Hill Austin and husband Mike of Midland; his sons, James H. Hill, Jr. of Midland, and Lawrence Scott Hill and wife Beverly of Burnet, Texas. Marjorie's children, Candy Reed and husband, Jack, of Lakeway, TX, and son, E. Don Pogue and wife Susan of Midland, also survive him. "Pa" will be remembered by his grandchildren, Conner Dean Austin and wife Leslie; Allison Kay Austin Stephens and husband Jason; Lucas Cade Price and Hallie Hill Price, Jalee Hill and Jodi Hill; Barry, Veronica, and Julie Pogue, Jay Reed, Cindi Bewley and Robin Iliss. Uncle "Jack" is also survived by his nieces and nephews. Like his parents, James was a longtime member of the Methodist Church of Midland and Burnet. He always professed a love for God and a strong faith in His will. While his loved ones and friends grieve his passing, they know that James and Marjorie are reunited after their short and lonely separation. "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life". John 3:16 The family will receive friends at Ellis Funeral Home, Saturday, June 30, 2007 between the hours of 5:00 P.M. and 7:00 P.M. Funeral services have been scheduled for 11:00 A.M. Monday, July 2, 2007 at First United Methodist Church of Midland. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenneth Baker, Bill Baker, Jerry Adams, Conner Austin, Luke Price, Barry Pogue, A.A. "Poostie" Jones, Joe Bledsoe, Ted Johnson, and Marie's Morning Dominoes Group. In lieu of flowers, memorials in James' name may be made to the following: West Texas Kidney Foundation, First United Methodist Church (Building Fund) in Midland or Burnet, or the SPCA of Midland. Arrangements are under the direction of Ellis Funeral Home. To place on-line condolences visit www.mem.com.
