At random: USS R-6 was fitted the first prototype US submarine snorkel at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in the closing months of the European part of WW II in April / May 1945 and successfully tested it off Fort Lauderdale, Fl. as the war against Japan ended in August 1945. The snorkel was removed from the USS R-6 and she was decommissioned and scrapped in September 1945.

McGEE, Sr., Rev. John Willis (Jack), 88, died of cancer June 29, 2007, at Arbor Terrace in Atlanta, Georgia. Rev. McGee was born in St. Clair, Missouri on March 27, 1919, to Charlotte Sanders McGee and Willis Daniel McGee. He graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia with a Bachelor's degree in journalism in 1947, and from Perkins School of Theology. Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, with a Master of Divinity degree in 1954. He served as a minister in the Northeast Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church for over thirty years. After his retirement, he served for several years as a chaplain for the Dallas Police Department. Rev. McGee served four years in the United States Navy during World War II, was assigned to submarine service in the South Pacific, and was honorably discharged in 1945. After moving to Atlanta in 1994, Rev. McGee was an active member of Glenn Memorial United Methodist church and an active volunteer with Atlanta Habitat for Humanity. Rev. McGee is survived by his wife of over sixty years, Harriet Winton McGee, daughter, Marcia McGee Perkins and partner, Robert Oldham, of Doswell, VA, son, John W. McGee, Jr. and daughter-in-law. Kathy I McGee, of Austin, Texas. daughter, Melanie McGee Platt and son-in-law, J. McDowell Platt, of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Meredith McGee, Matthew Davenport, Caitlin McGee, Bo Platt, and Jake Platt; and great-granddaughter, Eden Eckstrom. A memorial service will be held at Decatur First United Methodist Church. 300 E. Ponce de Leon Ave., Decatur, Georgia 30030, on Tuesday, July 3rd. The Reverends David Jones and Donn Ann Weber will officiate. A reception at the church will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Atlanta Habitat for Humanity, 519 Memorial Drive, Atlanta. GA 30312, or Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church, 1660 N. REIFEL, Charles Joseph, 73, passed away June 30, 2007 in Houston, Texas. Charley was born October 5, 1933 to Edwin and Erna Reifel in Galveston, Texas and graduated from Reagan High School in 1951. He served in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service, then graduated from the University of Houston in 1962. He was a faithful member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Charley is preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his beloved wife of almost 48 years, Sigrid Reifel; daughters, Christina Reifel and Erika Meneghetti and husband, Louis; grandchildren, Ryan Thompson, Jacquelyn Halda and husband, Bryan, Brittany Vargas and husband, Buzz, and Julia, Robert, Paul and Michael Meneghetti; great-grandchildren, Grace and Andrew Halda, and Austin Vargas, and numerous other relatives. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2007 at Heights Funeral Home where Charley will also lie in state from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, 2007. The funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 5, 2007 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 306 East 15th Street, Houston, Texas 77008 with Reverend Timothy Carr officiating. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Garden of Memories, Houston, Texas. For those desiring, memorial donations may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church.
