OK Old Salt RCK, If indeed you are correct and "She Is An Absolute Beauty"
Why not do all of us a favor; do a copy, save, and post the photograph?
Then we can agree or disagree, much to the delight of other readers. |

Don't give up while you still have some hair. Have you tried sent it back to yourself via an e-mail? Then save it and post?
Good luck, you need it with MSN |

I did tryed that but MSN, for some reason, wants to keep photos in their ball park and won't let me play. I still think there is a way around Bill Gates, I just haven't found it yet! |

Thanks for the assist Patti. Now a bit of history. The Gudgeon was named after her WWII predecessor which made 12 sucessfull war patrols before her loss. She was built in Portsmouth, New Hampshire in 1952. She is a Tang class submarine patterned after the German type XXII or the first class of boat specifically designed with the "Snorkel" capability rather than an add on. She was home ported at Pearl and was the subject of chapter 2, "Whiskey A GoGo", in a book by Sherry Sontag et.al. The Gudgeon broached in the middle of the Soviet Navy. At the time her batteries were flat ,but she remained submerged for 48+ hours. Air was so bad they spread Lithium on the bunks to absorb CO2. The stories I heard from the crew did not jibe with the story in the book in all details. As usual the skipper, Lt Cdr. Bessic, was blamed for the incident over which he had no control. The name of the book is "Blind Man's Bluff". She was the first submarine in history to sail around the world. She served her country well making many "Northern runs" until she was decommissioned in 1982 and sold to the Turkish Navy. After reconditioning she was renamed thr HGC Hizirreis. In 2004 she was retired and now is a museum boat in Yzmit, Turkey. I have read e-mails on Ron Durlings BBS from her Turkish Officers and Crew and they showed a great pride and love of the former Gudgeon. |

You are very welcome, Bob. But the thanks goes to you...not only for the pix, but the "bit of history". Now I have one more book to add to my
"summer reading list". We have a "dog-eared" copy that I think both my husband and son have read at least a 1/2 dozen times. So, now
it's my turn.
