I believe it was Admiral "Bull" Halsey who wanted to ride Hirohito's white horse, not Admiral Nimitz. And, even though someplace in Arizona, I believe, sent him a handmade saddle, and someplace in Texas sent him spurs, he wasn't allowed to ride that particular white horse through the streets of Tokyo. |

You are correct, Cora. The saddle was presented to him in 1945 by the Reno, NV Chamber of Commerce. It is now part of Museum Collection at US Naval Academy.

I stand corrected...The point was to emphasize that the United States forces in the Pacific held the little ineffective Japanese emperor in absolute and utter contempt. In thinking about it, the statement fits Halsey's personality far better than Nimitz. Thanks Jack, for contacting me about this correction.
