At random: The USS Blenny SS 324, on her last patrol of WW II sank 63 vessels. One by torpedo and 62 by deck gunfire, demolition charges set by boarding parties or by burning. On several occasions shotguns were fired through the boats bottoms. These were all vessels under the 500 ton JANAC limit for tonnage sunk and not counted in the "official" totals or ships sunk. This is also a record for the most vessels ever sunk by a submarine on one patrol.

What I like about the Purple Heart is the same thing I like about the Submarine Combat Patrol Pin....Every man who got one of either one SERVED AT RISK...You don't get them for falling off a barstool in the Chiefs Club or going on a trip to the County Fair. DEX

Warshot, I read your post...Stood up, saluted and cheered. You are the last of the armor plated, bulletproof, hardnosed, dues paying sonuvabitches. Proud to be your friend and so was she and our Kris (Who retired on 21 last friday.) DEX

Jim, That is outstanding! Where is it? You would have to be airborne to see it all though.

What kind of nincompoop would villify ANYONE who got a Purple Heart.

The Navy did NOT pass them out in crakerjack boxes. To me the attack on John Kerry, no matter which way you lean politicaly was a DISGRACE.

Steamboat,

This was done in New York...at the site of the New Windsor Cantonment, the last encampment of the Continental Army after the Revolution..

Possible points of interest. The Order of the Purple Heart is an order whose membership roll depends on NO INDIVIDUAL, COMMITTEE or GROUP DECISION....It depends solely on being wounded in hostile action in defence of one's country. NEXT...The shield above George Washington's likeness on the medal is Washington's coat of arms or family crest of arms. It is also the flag of the nation's capital Washington, D.C....Three red stars and two red stripes on a field of white. DEX

I don't think John Bay was or will remain the only person to "question" any of Kerry's citations including his Purple Hearts. I for one have as much respect for his awards as he does.... which we all know is "0", as for his Silver Star with valor "V".. There Never was such an award ... But Kerry got one anyway. Go figure??????? It was easy go buy the Bronze "V" and stick it on the ribbon.. wa la.
I do know that in many cases several warriors have declined the award.. Reason being that wounds they recieved were not major enough to keep them out of the hunt or were what they considered scratchs.. The very same types of "wounds" that get so many this beautiful and most deserving honor. Unfortunitly it seems that in some circles this has become a sore topic sorta speak...especially among some service people.

Well, for the record, I'd like to say that I think Kerry's citations were politically motivated and contrived......He certainly was looking forward to receiving them, and I'd be ashamed for him trying to put himself in the same status as a real hero like Warshot...... It's my own opinion....my opinion...not fact, that Kerry is/was a self centered, politically motivated twit...

He has no business associating himself with real warriors................

This is right across the Hudson from me...in Newburgh, NY. I can't wait to get over there and see it.

My Dad was also recipient of Purple Heart in WWII...after having been shot down twice over Channel.

Gentlemen, Divisiveness and accrimonious exchange destroyed another Submarine Sailors Board...I know, I was there and was guiltier than most and a major contributor to its' demise. Like a person who commits murder, I wish I could undo that which cannot be undone...but there are consequences for ones' actions and I must accept reponsibility for my part. Having said that, there is nothing more righteous than a a reformed whore. But I ask you not to allow comments meant to honor the recipients of an award lierally earned by the shedding of blood in defense of ones country to degenerate into offensive political rhetoric. It's not necessary...unwanted by the gentleman who has created this boatsailors "come one and all" sandbox for us. There are innumerable venues where it is perfectly acceptable to spew political hatred, bash public figures and set fire to folks who don't view the world through your eyes....let's not turn this wonderful gift into one of them. I'm new at this bite your tongue stuff...I'm a member of Don's Anonymous, where sinners get rehabbed and a new coat of paint. If I can do it. it should be a cakewalk for the rest of you. "You've gotta know when to hold em...know when to fold em....Know when to walk away and know when to run..." DEX

In oder to receive the Military Order of the Purple Heart the wounds must be severe enough to require MEDICAL attention. A scratch won't get it.

Stoops, Thanks...I'm working at it. It's rough at times...folks say stuff that makes you want to go get the old double barrel blunderbuss and clean out the henhouse....But, Don would recall my GET OUT OF JAIL FREE card and put me on some kind of neighborhood watch list. Being able to come here and run unfettered through the clover and pee-pee on the petunias, is the best comeback gift an old stove-up smokeboat sailor can be given. Sometimes it takes ignored people to get the word, but I am convinced that eventually they figure it out....Hope so. Thanks again....Damn it is refreshing to visit a submarine venue where you don't have to duck brick bats and swinging 2X4's.....I may even eventually cancel my personal protection policy with Don Corleone and tell Guido that he can come down off the roof....and start digging up the landmines and rolling up the concertina razor wire. Thanks again. DEX

Warshot that is what should be the criteria for this medal but I am hearing differently from some folks in the field. It does seem that Unfortunitly not everyone is playing or has been playing by the rules. My Son has been wounded twice, both were superficial wounds he recieved in firefights, both required medical attention.. He declined the Purple Heart as have other shipmates of his who were in similar situations. He said it just did not seem right when others were getting hurt much worse and really earning the award.. This is not a new practise, I have a dear friend who is a Silver Star while in the USMC in Vietnam. He has 2 Purple hearts and has declined another because of the "minor" nature of that wound.. I think the character of the warrior has a little to do with it. My Son thinks it's a "bad luck" award.. He says it seems those who get one are certain to collect a few more if kept in the field..it's like a bullet magnet.. my old Grunt friend agrees.. My Dad however had 2 Purple Hearts also.. One he received in France in July 44 and the other in Korea in Jan 52..both required medical attention big time.
As for kerry .. Heaven knows what the truth is with him and I really don't care because personally I don't like him or his type.. Like Dex says thats a story for a different forum for sure.

I would like to amplify Warshot's comments. My Dad, a real combat veteran and hero to his son, used to say. Ribbons over one's pocket represent that man's resume In the 82nd Airborne Division there's a saying,"You want to know who we are....ask us where we've been.") To the Old Man, two of the most sacred awards were The Purple Heart and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. He would smile and say,"You see EITHER one of those and you know that the sonuvabitch didn't sit out the war in a rear area supply dump or escorting convoys from Fort Benning to Camp Blanding." After the War, my father visited a Chinese Restaurant in Birmingham, Alabama. The son of the owner had volunteered for the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) and served in my father's battalion. His boys built the Virginia Darre Lost Colony at Mantio NC and the Merriwether Lewis National Monument at Hoenwald, TN....The boy, now a man followed my Dad into the Parachute Infantry and served with him until being mortally wounded in Holland....My Father personally took me, my sister and mother to Birmingham for the express purpose of pinning his son's Purple Heart on the father. The dining room was filled with diners...My Father stood up, called for silence and gave a short combat account of the young Chinese-American lad...extolled his bravery and contribution to the combat history of the regiment and pinned his PH on a tearful father...He declined to stay longer and returned to the car and wept. To him, the Purple Heart was not an award to be diluted or trifled with. Warshot, he would have respected you the first time he saw that purple and white ribbon. DEX

I agree Dex My Dad cherished his CIB above everything else he was awarded and it went to the grave with him as well as my Qual Dolphins and my Son's first Trident. I too am a fortunite soul. I have been the middle guy in a family of heros, My Dad of course and now my Son.. I only wish my Dad lived lived long enough to see my Son today. My Dad passed away in 2000.. Funny thing about both of them is they were and are too modest to talk about their exploits but like you say the stuff above their pockets tells their story all too well as well as the emotional baggage and mental and physical scars both had and do carry with them daily....
But that's why they have this old sewer pipe sailor around to brag enough about both of them and embarrass the hell out of them both.
An old friend of mine who used to own a few trotters in Yonkers N.Y. once said " You never brag about your horse, wife or children because sure as heck one will make a liar out of ya".... He always had some bad luck with his horses. and I for one don't have to worry about it. Life is truely good.

Bye the way I just was informed that my Son is Stateside again.. His deployment was cut short for a school assignment...Looks as though he may stand down for a while.. This is one happy family tonight.
Yes it is a good day..a really good day.
