At random: John Philip Holland built several submarines before the USS Holland, which became the first undersea craft commissioned by the U.S. Navy. The Holland was purchased on April 11, 1900 for a price of $150,000. It was commissioned into the US Navy on October 12, 1900.

Subject: another update

One of the things that captured my attention when viewing photos of the early subs at Hawaii and when they were stationed in Honolulu Harbor was the harbor light station at the inner mouth of the harbor. It figured subtly in the background of so many photos. I've tried over the years to try and find any more images of this elusive structure to no avail. The other day I did find an image that had the building, but, again, in the background. I submit this for your perusal.
