BERWICK, Walter Minor April 15, 2017 A Patriot's Life Scott was born on November 10, 1940, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Walter Hamilton Berwick and Marie Minor Berwick. He graduated from Upper Darby High School in Pennsylvania in 1957, and in 2013 he was inducted into the Upper Darby High School "Wall of Fame" for his service to his country. Scott enlisted in the United States Navy in December 1957 and served as an Electronics Technician in the Submarine Service (Diesel), attaining the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. In 1961 Scott transferred to the Naval Reserve Submarine Division while he attended Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey where he received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1965. In 2009, Scott received an Honorary Doctorate for his distinguished career from the University. After graduating, he was appointed an Ensign in the Naval Reserve and attached to the Submarine Division in Washington, D.C. where he later attained the rank of Lieutenant JG. In 1967, Scott was assigned as a Foreign Service Officer for the Central Intelligence Agency. Scott became legendary in the annals of the CIA's classified history and was personally involved in challenging and thwarting the spread of Soviet and Cuban influence in the Caribbean, South and Central America as well as the Far East during the Cold War. Scott attained the rank of SIS-2 (the military equivalent of an Army Major General Officer) before he retired in 1990. He received the CIA Career Intelligence Medal among many other achievement awards. In 1990, Scott started his own business, BPA Berwick, and specialized in hostage negotiations worldwide. One of Scott's cases on which he worked later became the basis for the movie "Proof of Life" with Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe. After 9/11, Scott was again sought for service by his country, becoming personally involved in tracking and eliminating Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, Africa, the UAE, Latin America and the Philippine Islands. He also worked at Guantanamo Bay for several months following 9/11. He was then part of a group of career CIA professionals training young officers in Washington, D.C./Virginia. Scott married his current wife, Christie Jean "C.J." Berwick, co-owner of The Fish House and The Fish House Encore Restaurants in Key Largo, FL, in 1994. They shared a love of traveling, reading, tennis, boating, and enjoyed sharing time with family and friends. He was a member of CIRA (CIA Retirees Association), MENSA, US Naval Institute, and was a former Commodore of the Upper Keys Coast Guard Auxiliary. Scott is survived by C.J., his beloved wife; four children, two step-children, and seven grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be sent in his memory to St. James the Fisherman Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 509, Islamorada, FL, 33036, or Florida Sheriff's Youth Ranch. FITZGIBBONS, Barry M., USN, Ret., 48, of Norfolk, Virginia, passed away April 15, 2017. A native of Fall River, he was a retired Senior Chief with US Navy, serving in the submarine service aboard the USS Pheonix and the USS Scranton. He was a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Council # 367. Mr. Fitzgibbons is survived by his parents Barry and Mary Ellen Fitzgibbons; brothers Sean and Scott Fitzgibbons; sisters Sheila Fitzgibbons and Lizbeth Serpa; his fianc Deonna Gardea; and her children Michael, Lillianne, and Natalie Gardea, and Mariah Huffman. His Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, April 23, 2017 at 12:00 NOON in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Cherry Place, 178 Winter St., Fall River. Relatives and friends invited.
