At random: Long considered a versatile and deadly instrument of war, the submarine has broadened her capabilities with the adoption of nuclear power. Today the submarine serves as a ballistic missile platform, early warning station, killer of surface and underwater vessels, scout, coastal raider troop transport, supply ship, mine layer, and seaplane tender.

This is an article about the USS JFK currently under construction.

Embedded in the article is a short video showing how the pre-assembled stern is put in place.

I found the process interesting.

Never experienced any near collisions on a smoke boat, but absolutely did on a DL in north Atlantic when a NATO DD cut danger-close across our bow. I don't know why the cowboy NATO skipper did what he did, but our skipper was not happy. (I was on bridge at the time).

The Liberty ships, but on a much larger scale. Compartmentalized construction.

Walt,

You are absolutely right sir; it's just a bigger replication plan of the hundreds of Liberty,Victory ships and T-2 tankers built in the U.S. during WWII. Then there were the many Empire class cargo ships built on the same concept in Canada for that war effort. Numerous UK shipyards have built compartmentalised sections for the two large Royal Navy aircraft carriers now being assembled and completed in Scotland. Nothing new under the sun it seems, but just a great ship construction idea being carried forward.

I think there was a DD or DE built in 14 days by somebody but can't remember who. Was done as a publicity stunt. I think it required a lot of work afterwards.

Back in 1945 PNS was knocking out Tench class boats 4 at a time [that's all together] in 160 days or so.
