GRAY, Julian Collier, 65, of Laurel, Maryland, peacefully passed away on July 3, 2017 at his home. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 12, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home, 10220 Guilford Road, Jessup, Maryland 20794. Visitation with the family will be at 11:00 a.m. before the memorial service. Julian, the son of Mattie Louise Rowe and Charles William Gray, was born on Monday, July 23, 1951 in the South Bronx section of New York City. He attended PS 47 in his elementary years and PS 123 for Junior High School. He attended Samuel Gompers Vocational High School in 1967 and later volunteered for the naval submarine service at the height of the Vietnam War draft. Julian was an ICFN seaman (interior communications Electrician). He was soon deployed on the submarine USS Will Rogers and served with the Gold crew. He received a letter of commendation for superior performance added to his military record before being honorably discharged in 1975. Julian and his wife, Cleante, raised their two daughters in New Paltz, NY and he spent the majority of his career at IBM in Poughkeepsie, NY. He was the founder of IBM's Summer Enrichment Program, which lasted over twelve years and enriched the lives of over a hundred young people from his former high school in the South Bronx. After thirty years with IBM, Julian retired and eventually settled in Laurel, Maryland. Julian's main interest was spending times with his family. He loved reading, traveling, laughter, music, and dancing. Julian also was a student at the Discovery Institute in New Paltz. Julian is survived by his wife, Cleante Gray; his two daughters, Yelena Johnson and Veronica Jackson; his two son-in-laws, Rick Johnson and Terrance Jackson; his grandchildren, Aneley Johnson, Amaya Johnson, Alivia Johnson, Chelsea Jackson, and Christopher Jackson; his three siblings, Roxanne Copeland, Ellwood Gray, and Claude Gray, nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and his former students who he came to view as his children. He was predeceased by his mother, Mattie Gray. Published in the Poughkeepsie Journal on July 8, 2017


WALSH, Raymond F., Jr., 86, passed away Wednesday, July 5, 2017. He was the husband of the late Shirley (Gartsu) Walsh for forty-five years. Born in Woonsocket, he was the son of the late Raymond and Lila (Perry) Walsh. Mr. Walsh was a US Navy Veteran, who served during the Korean Conflict. He qualified in submarines as a crew member of the submarine USS Piper. A standout athlete at both Blackstone High School and Dean Academy, he also attended Bryant College prior to his military service. Ray spent his career in the Home Furnishings Industry working at Roitman’s in Providence, owning his own retail stores, and as a longtime Manufacturer’s Representative for Bassett Furniture Industries. “Red” loved Jazz, New England Sports Teams and vacationing on Cape Cod. He was active in the sport of Thoroughbred Racing, owning his initial horse in 1960. He was also the Co-Founder of the first New England Patriots Booster Club. He is survived by two sons, David Walsh and his wife Denise of Warwick, and Jonathan Walsh and his wife Jodie of Cumberland, and three grandchildren, Anna, Jackson, and Jonathan Walsh. He was the brother of the late Barbara Whitaker. The funeral will be held Tuesday, July 11, 2017 at 9 AM from the O’NEILL Funeral Home, 3102 Mendon Rd., Cumberland, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in St. John Vianney Church, 3609 Diamond Hill Rd., Cumberland. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland. Visiting hours, Monday 4-7 PM. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Cumberland-Lincoln, 1 James J. McKee Way, Cumberland, RI 02864.


WRIGHT, Gayler Franklin, 94, a resident of Terrytown , La. Passed away on June 26, 2017. Gayler was born on September 4, 1922, in Arkansas City, Kansas. He was proceeded in death by his loving wife of 67 years Ann Catherine Cinolotac Wright on July 18, 2014. Gayler is survived by his son Harvey Gayle Wright and his wife Janie; daughter Bonnie Ann Buckner and her husband Don; son Donald Lee Wright and his wife Karen and daughter Lynn Marie Ballay. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Gayler served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He served on the cruiser USS Memphis (CL-13) and the submarine USS Paddle (SS-263). He qualified in submarines in Paddle in1943 and was MoMM1(SS) when released by the Navy. He was a proud veteran who loved his country. Gayler told his family "Life truly began for me when I joined the service and raised my right hand and pledged allegiance to his country." His luckiest day was always Friday the 13th, because on Friday the 13th in 1943 his submarine survived 89 depth charges off the coast of Osaka, Japan. His service in the Navy shaped his life going forward forever. Gayler retired after 38 years of marine work as Vice President of Operations at Dixie Carriers, Inc.. He lived out his final years at " The Forum at The Woodlands Senior Living Facility" in Woodlands, Texas. Many thanks to all who provided him with great care and love. Private Interment will be at Lake Lawn Metairie All Saints Mausoleum on August 5, 2017. Published in The Times-Picayune from Aug. 2, 2017


SCHAEFER, Robert Lane, 70, returned to our Heavenly Father on June 30th, 2017, in his St. George, UT, home after a battle with terminal cancer. He was born and raised in Riverton, WY. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served on a submarine during the Vietnam War. He worked as a restaurant and bar manager in Lake Tahoe at Harrah's and had many great stories and memories of the magnate (who would frequent his casinos often). He gave much of his time working at Dixie Care and Share. He was known for his generous spirit, hard-working attitude, and his love of all things golf. He also loved technology and his family. He is survived by his wife, Diane (Toomey) Schaefer, step-daughter, Jena (Jackson) Eames, son-in-law, Aaron Eames, and grandson, Logan Eames. A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 10th, 2017, at 5:30 p.m. at the Rainbow Ridge Clubhouse, located at 1526 N. Dixie Downs Rd., St. George, UT, 84770. Dinner will be provided.
