CUNNINGHAM, John P., Jr., ENC(SS), USN, Ret, known as Jack, of New Hope, PA since 1976, passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, after a short illness. He was spry 90 years old. Born April 20, 1927 in Germantown, PA, to Rose Anna (nee Lee) and John P. Cunningham, Sr., Jack served in the U.S. Navy for over 40 years, 24 years in active duty, attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer E7. He enlisted with his mother’s support at the age of 17, and his active submarine service took him to such stations as Japan, Athens, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. He served on six submarines including the USS Lionfish, USS Sablefish, USS Archerfish, and USS Sea Owl, working in the engine room. While in the Navy, he took up boxing. As a civilian, Jack retired in 1988 from the Naval Air Propulsion Center in Trenton, NJ. While stationed in Athens, Jack met and married Mary Deligianni on December 26, 1962, returning state-side March 1963. His four children were born in Rhode Island: Jenny Carroll (Tom), John (III), Glenn, and Stephen. Jack’s legacy will be continued by his grandchildren who called him Poppy: Ellena Carroll, Theodore Carroll, and Sophia Carroll. In the true spirit of the phrase, “Jack of all trades,” Jack was a skilled electrician, plumber, and auto mechanic. Home improvement was his passion; he always had the right tool for the job! After retiring, he was a volunteer at Doylestown hospital for nearly five years, contributing over 4,000 hours of service. Jack also enjoyed watching boxing, and he was an avid fan of the New England Patriots. He was a fixture at the Cornerstone gym. In addition, Jack was one never to miss his favorite game show, “Jeopardy.” Family and friends are invited to Jack’s Life Celebration, from 10-11am, Friday, October 20th at St. Martin of Tours Church, 1 Riverstone Circle, New Hope, PA. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Martin of Tours, 1 Riverstone Circle, New Hope, PA 18938; New Hope Eagle Fire Dept., 46 Sugan Rd, New Hope, PA 18938; or, Lambertville-New Hope Ambulance & Rescue Squad, 70 Alexander Ave, Lambertville, NJ 08530.
