Lead-Acid batteries only emit Hydrogen during charge, and never oxygen, and only when the TVG [Temp, Voltage, Gassing curve] is exceeded. This normally happens only when on the Finishing Rate and both temp and voltage rise above that curve.
Our diesel boats had a separate battery ventilation system which discharged into the engine rooms where the engines consumed it giving them a bit of an extra punch. Hydrogen detectors in the ventilation system showed the % of hydrogen in the air and anything <1.5% was safe. If that was exceeded the ventilation fans were speeded up and/or charging voltage was dropped.
How's that for 50+ years since I qualified as a controller-man!

Can't shut you up for telling the truth! There are very few real journalists anymore and they are rarely let on radio or television. |

Well Steamboat it's getting more difficult every year. One thing very important is to listen to the entire story and not rely on just sound bites. Reason through the BS spread by both parties. |

Finding the truth is hard, turning over as many rocks as possible and using logic hurts lots of folks minds. Always remember, over 75% of folks on the planet firmly believe the cosmos was created in 6 days, truth is easier to find if you really want to find it.

Ha! Ha!, Gary, and there were dinosaurs on the ark. The more information that is available, the dumber we have become. It seems that the so called "information age" has a lot of baggage. When I studied science at Michigan State University, I never in my worst nightmare thought that I would have to defend my belief in it. But we do digress, don't we?

Quick question... On the cubicle was there one amp-hour counter, or one for each battery? Can't remember.

Yes for sure. The first and hopefully the last.
This is how I worded the statement I posted on PigBoats front page about the loss:
"PigBoats.COM sends our Condolences and Thoughts to the Argentine People and Navy with the loss of the ARA San Juan. It is with sad hearts that the world once again realizes the dangers of submarining and the bravery of the crews that go to sea in these "Boats".
Hand Salute, Sailors! You are missed."
