BROOCKS, William Rice, 92, passed away November 24, 2017. Bill was born December 18, 1924 in Pharr, TX to Minnie Rice and Ben C Broocks. Bill grew up in Texas graduating from McAllen High School. At the outbreak of World War II, Bill enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific Theater on one of the most decorated submarines of WWII. He qualified in submarines in USS Barb in 1942 and was QM2(SS) when released by the Navy in 1946. After the war, he graduated from University of Texas at Austin in 1953 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering. On graduation, he went to work for Sun Oil Co. At Sunoco, Bill's career ultimately rose to Division Manager controlling international operations and drilling activities in several foreign countries. Upon his retirement, Bill and his wife, Marian, returned from living in Algeria to Dallas. Bill loved the Lord and served his church, Highland Park Presbyterian Church, as Clerk of the Session for 10 years. Bill is survived by Marian Kern Broocks, his beloved wife of 69 years and his brother, John H. Broocks (Dallas). He is also survived by his three children, Rebecca Broocks Jung (Aubrey, TX), Ben C. Broocks and wife Diane Matthews Broocks (Austin, TX), and Dr. William Rice Broocks, Jr. and wife Jody Thornhill Broocks (Franklin, TN), nine grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He will be missed. Services will be held at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home, Saturday, December 9, 2017 at noon. Published in Dallas Morning News on Dec. 3, 2017


OUZTS, Albert Laurence, was born September 2, 1941 in Ware Shoals, SC, and passed away Friday November 10, 2017. He was preceded in death by his parents Jesse Paul and Frances K. Ouzts and infant brother, Bradley Cabot, of Greenwood SC. He is survived by Mary Brenda, his wife of 45 years, and four children; son, Brad Ouzts (Pam) of Raleigh, daughters Jana Smith (Van) of Lexington SC, Kelly Hall of Aberdeen, and Ashley Wright of Apex. He was the proud grandpa to seven, and great-grandpa to Natalie Gibert. During the Vietnam war, Larry served as Petty Officer Second Class, Torpedoman in the United States Navy. He was stationed on the submarine USS Harder at the time of his honorable discharge in 1967. During his service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. He retired after a career with the NC Dept of Environment and Natural Resources where he worked as a Facility Engineering Specialist. A memorial service will be held at Grace Lutheran Church (5010 Six Forks Rd, Raleigh, NC) on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 11:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, 950 West Faris Road, Greenville SC 29605 in memory of Larry. Published in The News & Observer on Dec. 3, 2017


GRANT, David, 72, of Hampden passed away November 30, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family. David, son of the late Lester and Marion (McKenzie) Grant, was born in Waltham on July 7, 1945. He was predeceased by his sister Leslie and stepmom Betsy. Dave proudly served his country in the US Navy as a submariner. He was a valued employee of Smith & Wesson for 37 ½ years and retired in 2007 as the Facilities Manager. Dave was a long-time member of the Western Mass Pistol League. He was a 50+year member of Federated Community Church of Hampden. An avid sailor, Dave is a past Commodore and dock master of the Pioneer Valley Yacht Club. Dave drove the Two-Town Trolley for the Hampden Senior Center. He will be missed by all who knew him, including his beloved wife of 40 years, Bobbi (Kerr) Grant, their children Lauren Hakala and her husband Mark of Keene, NH, Matthew Valiquette and his wife Peg of Fuquay Varina, NC, Christopher Valiquette and his wife Danielle of South Windsor, CT and Kristen Lacourse and her husband Butch of Westford, MA; his siblings Marion Owens and her husband Gary of Bellingham, MA, Marsha Grant of San Rafael, CA, Heidi Jupp and her husband Tyler of Melrose, MA, Joe Grant and his wife Linda of Hampden, and Charles Grant and his fiancée Kit of Nahant, MA; his grandchildren, Jared, Jacenia, Dillon, Lily, Logan and Corey; and many extended family members and friends. Visiting Hours for David will be held Wednesday, December 6, 2017 from 4PM to 7PM at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres, 21 Tinkham Road, Springfield. Family and friends are invited to meet directly at the Federated Community Church of Hampden, 590 Main Street, Hampden, MA on Thursday, December 7, 2017 at 11AM. Burial will be private a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in David’s memory may be made to the Federated Community Church of Hampden, P.O. Box 246, Hampden, MA 01036 or to Friends of Hampden Seniors, 104 Allen St., Hampden, MA 01036.Published in The Republican on Dec. 4, 2017
