At random: Coronation ceremonies of Emperor Alexander II of Russia in 1855 were enlivened by a submarine concert. Wilhelm Bauer, a Bavarian inventor, took three musicians under the waters of Kronstadt Harbor in a submarine he had built, where they played appropriate music during the coronation. The music was distinctly heard on the surface.

We followed them into port only a few minutes later. Well, we went into port, they sat on the reef for three days!!!

Thanks, actually the first photos I have ever seen of the event. We were probably already moored by the time these were taken. We were like 15 minutes behind them.

In the third photo, according to the channel markers, it appears they are set off the channel a good bit.

They missed the channel by 150 feet.

In other words the Manuvering Watch was a bunch of non-quals.

What we thought was so funny was we had had huge issues with our gyro the whole patrol. Had a First Class Electrician babysitting it. He even slept and ate in front of it. He had a huge ashtray that sort of smoldered next to him like an incense bowl. We always kidded him about "...praying to the great god Sperry". Had some other issues too that I can't remember any longer. They had everything working and missed it. We didn't and waved as we went by.
