At random: Robert Fulton, inventor of the steamboat, was an avid submarine enthusiast. He built several submersible warships, one of which was known as the Nautilus. |

COMSUBBBS Posts: 2974 Location: Liverpool, England | Subject: RE: WTH? Ric, Just an observation and nothing more. That figure for the Army is about right, due to not as many recruit figures as in recent years. But unlike the Germans (sans their u-boats & their jets that can't fly) plus others not paying their NATO tabs, we are a fully paid up member. If the proverbial hits the fan and things do get serious, all those on reserve will be recalled, and those that have never been anywhere or done anything will be conscripted if need be. That would be a massive culture shock for the many who just take the military for granted, but all's fair in love and war so they say. Pedro

Also, where is the neckerchief? Do you reckon they teach them how to properly roll it and tie a square knot? Another thought, the females will at least fill out the oversize jumpers that the Navy has been issuing male sailors. Now about that white hat..... some old swabby needs to train the entire fleet how to roll that thing so it looks decent. Steamboat sends Edited by steamboat 2017-12-24 5:27 AM

So the uniform was not complete nor as meant to be warn. A lot of things have changed since you were a rag hat. Rolling the white hat is a big no-no. As for tying the neckerchief they may have gotten back to teaching the proper tying, but when crackerjack came back I had to show a lot of sailors how to do it.

Just think how many went through GLakes alone in the late sixties and seventies. When I attended my son's graduation in '93 the building looked empty compared to my graduation in '69. I estimate nearly 60,000/year and how many more went to San Diego and Orlando.

The only comments I'll offer is that they should bring back the flat hat for winter wear and use the Dixie cup for summer wear. And double-breasted P coats are a must. Flat hats, a DB P coat, black turtle neck and double rolled neckerchief is sharp. To say nothing about properly fitted "dragonized" Gabardine "Tailor mades" and Wellington boots.

It looked great until I was told you could only wear it in the 1st Naval District, which was Boston. Rat's! I really liked the hat.

Master and Commander Posts: 1814 Location: Boydton, Virginia | Subject: RE: WTH? Violation or not they certainly need to do something to sharpen up the "Boot" image of the way even salty E1-6 wear the dress uniform now. They would look really disgraceful next to Marine and Army dress uniforms. And yes, I also have noticed the rolled white hats worn by Navy honor guards. They look really sharp. I reckon we should not complain too loud (as if us old vets make a difference) or they will drastically change the dress uniform along with the work and "undress" has been changed. Is it just my opinion, or are there folks didling with Navy uniforms who have never worn one? Last drastic change they said they did a survey..... well you can phrase questions to get the answers you want.... look at last election polls as an example! Steamboat sends
