HINSHAW, Michael A., 78, of Richmond, Indiana, died peacefully on Friday, December 29, 2017, at home surrounded by his loved ones, after a battle with brain cancer. Mike was born in Richmond on March 27, 1939, and grew up in the Quaker teachings and traditions on a 240 acre farm in Fountain City. His parents were Clyde Enos Hinshaw and Ellena Bess Clarke Hinshaw, and his brother was Rodney Hinshaw. After graduating from Fountain City High School (1957), and then Earlham College (1961), he left Wayne County to pursue a career in medicine. That journey first took him to Cincinnati where he graduated from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (1965). During the Vietnam War, he served our country in the Navy from 1965 to 1968, when he was honorably discharged. He had the honor of serving as the chief medical officer on the Polaris nuclear submarine USS Casimir Pulaski in Charleston, South Carolina. Mike then also served as the chief medical officer for Squadron 12 on the USS Bushnell submarine tender in Key West, Florida, and did some work with the Navy SEALs. After completing his service, he returned to his medical training and completed his surgical residency in Lexington, Kentucky, at the University of Kentucky's College of Medicine. He was elevated there to Chief Resident for Surgery and Chief Resident of Cardio Thoracic Surgery, and completed his fellowship in vascular surgery in 1973. While in medical school, Mike married pediatric nurse Carol Tompkins, from Charleston, West Virginia. They married on August 1, 1964. Together they had three children along their journey - Mark, James, and Michele. Mike returned to Wayne County with his young family in 1973, where he became a partner in General Surgeons, Inc. (the first professional corporation formed under Indiana law), and practiced medicine as a surgeon at Reid Memorial Hospital. Over his 25 years in private practice, he was known for his warm and respectful bedside manner with his patients and their families, as well as his exceptional surgery skills. One of his most cherished honors was to have been chosen by his peers and community in 1992 to receive the Paul S. Rhoads Humanity in Medicine Award - awarded to a physician who has demonstrated deep commitment to humanitarian values in serving his patients and his colleagues and institutions in the medical services arena. During his career, Mike was certified through the American Board of Surgery and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgery. He served as Chief of the Surgery Section at Reid, Secretary of the Medical Staff, Chief of Staff, a director on the Reid Hospital Foundation's Board of Directors, a member of the Oncology Committee, an officer for the Commission on Cancer with the American College of Surgeons, a member of the executive committee for the American College of Surgeon's Indiana Chapter, a member of the Reid Hospital Wayne County Foundation, a member of the Board of Directors for Reid Hospital, and a member of Reid's Corporate Identity Steering Committee. In the Wayne County community, he also served as a trustee of Earlham College, a member of the IU East Foundation, and a trustee for the Boys & Girls Club of Richmond. Mike was also honored to have been a member of the Whitewater Masonic Lodge (No. 159), F.&A.M., and the Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite. He and Carol are members of Central United Methodist Church. After Mike retired in 1998, he spent his time devoted to the loves of his life - his family, traveling the world with close friends, ridding the world of those pesky clay pigeons (i.e., shooting trap and skeet), and all things reminiscent of his days on the farm (e.g., mowing the grass on his Country Clipper tractor). Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Carol Hinshaw; son Mark (Pam) Hinshaw of Kansas City, son James (Amy) Hinshaw of Indianapolis, and daughter Michele Hinshaw of Indianapolis; grandchildren Matthew, Laura, and Rachael Hinshaw; sister-in-law Lynda Hinshaw of Richmond; niece Christina (Bill) Pearce and nephews Bob (Kristin) and David Hinshaw; Norquest cousins James, Lisa, and Rita; and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Clyde and Ellena Bess, brother Rodney, aunt Idris Hinshaw, aunt Catharine Norquest, and cousin Carol Dugan. Visitation for Dr. Michael Anthony Hinshaw will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 5, 2018, with a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m., at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 6, 2018, at Central United Methodist Church, 1425 East Main Street, Richmond with Pastor Tom Ream officiating. Burial will be in Willow Grove Cemetery in Fountain City, Indiana, with military honors provided by the Wayne County Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to: Reid Hospital Cancer Center (1100 Reid Parkway, Richmond, IN 47374) or the Boys & Girls Club of Richmond (1717 South L Street, Richmond, IN 47374). Condolences may be sent to the family via the guest book at www.doanmillsfuneralhome.com. Published in The Palladium-Item on Dec. 31, 2017
